Thanks for your help. I finally got the display to respond. It was stuck solid on PE0 000. I kept doing the door Plus down arrow then release door alarm until it added a decimal point... the literature did not say what to do if not flashing.

You can find the reset button at the bottom of the ice maker. Remove the ice tray to locate it. Remove the ice tray. The red button you see is the reset button

try disconnecting thermistor and let run if ok replace it if no possible low on freon

The most likely cause is the defrost timer. It is supposed to defrost every 24 hours. The same thing happened to my GE. The evaporator at the back of the freezer was a solid block of ice and it was blocking the cooling vent to the fridge.

You need an engineer. That sounds like a 'Clixxon', a device that cycles the compressor on and off due to overheated gasses in the system. Do you have cats or dogs? The handle screws probably are hidden behind the plastic door liner which would have to be removed to gain access.

Spray it with kitchen cleaner. Scrub it with a Scotchbrite pan scourer to remove oxidisation. Spray it again, rub, rinse, and dry. Rub Vaseline on it. It will probably outlast you. If it did fail, the copper tube will pit and let the refrigerant gas leak out slowly until one day you find it isn't cooling. A refrigeration engineer could replace the pipe and re-gas it, but at 18 years old, it would be time to treat yourself to a new one. Whoever did the soldering didn't wipe off the flux, which is acidic.

The ice maker is defective and should be repaired/replaced.
