When you push the line where the call is parked, you should already have the reciever in your hand. If you need to put the call on speaker and you have the reciever in hand, just push the speaker button.

Which means ... while NOT YOUNG... that is a fairly robust (high quality) telephone set... (vintage 1983). If you use it as a wall phone... or desk set... It is actually IMPORTANT to have the HANDSET HOOK set appropriately (read the manual... (see below)). Check the BATTERY CONTACTS and make sure they are clean & shiny... If NOT... Use a soft graphite pencil to gently burnish the battery contacts. If they are heavily corroded ... comment me back & I will detail instructions on how to restore (or replace) functionality... Keep the hand-set cradle clean... and sharply peck the switch hook a few times to get those old contacts attention... (technical term: cycle the switch-hook). You apparently have unheard messages on the voicemail system provided by your telephone company. This system records messages when someone calls while you're already on the phone. Please contact your telephone company for instructions on accessing their voicemail system.

Sounds like either you have do-not-disturb activated, or you have call-forward-all to voice mail set. You should have call-forward-no-answer turned on but it's easy to enter wrong code. Find a list of codes for your system and see if its one of those.
