- The Lionel 6110 Scout Engine came stock with a pellet smoke generator. Sometimes these get converted so the smoke puffs more out the front. But the way it came out of the box is pellets.

You CANNOT measure the health of the transformer winding, either primary or secondary with an ohmmeter so resistance value is a moot thing. A single shorted turn is fatal but will not show up on an ohmmeter. This is the way you test the unit: Put the core back in if it has been removed. Apply 120 volts using a 15 Watt lamp in series with the power, The lamp will limit the current to a safe value. What looks like a burn mark often is discolored varnish. If the lamp goes out, the winding is OK. The core MUST be in for this test!

The following two links will take you to electronic versions of the two documents Lionel produced for the 3830. The diagram should illustrate well enough how the sub is assembled. You may save the documents to your computer and/or print them.

first you need to test the actual transformer's input then the outputs on primary and secondary winding. Be careful because you can get a schok. If you do not know what you are doing with electricity and don't understand how to test transformers then you should consult an electronic service center to help with this procedure.
Here is a guide to test transformers.

Since this is a train control there is a potentiometer in it (variable resistor) you will want to check that as well.
In the end the best and cheapest route is look for a replacement one.

Hi,
You are hearing the primary hum but the secondary is either burnt out or there is a fuse that is blown...
Check for fuses and/or circuit breaker...
Also you can OHM out the coils to see if you get continuity through each coil...coil open equals no good...

I have a holiday tradition
try to connect from the other side of the track i am not familular with this model but of the track as been switched round maybe it only connects from one side.
I have soldered wires to the tracks before to have a perment connection and then just terminate the wires to the power supply with clips. maybe this is a work round.
I hope this was useful and Happy holidays.
