As the other respondant has said there are on ebay and no doubt amazon, but I gather they may prove touchy in some cases. Firewire was to me an XP thing because it was faster than the then USB ports about of type 1.xx, with type 2.xx only slowly growing, plus it was a small fitting, this then did fade out to USB as mini and micro versions came into play. With a lot of earlier connection types I find that its better if an item has been fitted the "latest" version which means it is more compliant to adaption to other systems. Hope this helps.........

If Windows system did any upgrades it could lose drive settings. First, allow it some time to rebuild driver's database; if that doesn't work then try to restore windows to previous point.

I'd suggest to try the device on a different PC. If the issue persists the problem is obviously with the drive itself.

That error message usually means the drive is working intermittently (writing to the disk), and drive failure occurs shortly thereafter. You might try a different connection mode (USB?), and make sure you have everything on that drive backed up or copied elsewhere.
