Hi there! Well it sounds like the flash memory in your device has failed. This may not be the case. There is no way to say without testing and diagnostics, however if you can not access the files saved to the memory via the device(Playing the files) and the computer can not access that memory when connected, there is a strong possibility that your memory has failed. I am not sure the age of the device but it is well documented that all flash memory will at some point fail because it can only be read and re/written X amount of times(this is normal). Typically most devices will reach "EOL"(End Of Life), or end of use before the memory fails. The likely hood of recovering the files located within the inaccessible memory is very unlikely but may be possible. Replacing the memory chip in the device is possible but not feasible. If those files weren't premarked properly on computer before synchronizating (you can do that in WMP 10 with advanced tag editor) it's not likely you'll get those results. You can add those info on computer and sync files again.
However, if all of these files are marked properly (have filled Artist, Title and Album sections in advanced tag editor) maybe database is corrupted - what you need to do is refresh it. (Settings>Extra>DataBase Refresh>Yes)

iRiver IFP-799 is a IFP-700 series player.

Making transfers to the device can be done in either UMS or Manager mode.
UMS firmware matches with seeing the player as a removable disk in Windows Explorer and is also used for updating firmware, using iRiver PLUS software.
Manager firmware matches with iRiver Music Manager software.

When needing the Music Manager go to next site and enter the word
manager in the second column next to GO:
iriver music manager ( Ver. 3.21 ) shows up: click the item and read
the instructions for download and installation.

Apparently it is not compatible with newer versions of Windows, but there may be a workaround solution. Which version of Windows are you trying to install a driver for?

I would reset the player first. As long as you are absolutely sure that the hold button is not engaged, then resetting the player ought to make the hold message disappear. If the reset fails, plug the iRiver into the computer to see if the computer will recognize the player. If it does, then go ahead and update the firmware on the player from iRiver's website - it will have the side effect of fixing your issue.
