The issue is more likely the defrost timer in the freezer unit. They usually defrost every 24 hours to keep the fins of the evaporator in the freezer free of ice. Since you did not give the model etc I can only suggest you unplug it, open all the doors and place a fan on it for at least 12 hours. Plug it back in and see if the problem has gone away. It sounds like something has frozen and cannot move or a passage is blocked. This is only a guess but while you are waiting for an answer this might help.

I had similar problems with my GE and had to replace the control board. Solved the problem but when I examined the failed board the main filter capacitor was bad whic I replaced. I do not know if it fixed it I never put it back in.
