take the top loose on the dryer to acces the door switch. If it is the old style it should have a metal suround over the black switch. If the metal arm piece has broke, Ttake it off and tape the white button down to make it run.

D Floyd Kolb--
Our dryer only makes the knocking sound when it's going in the reverse direction. Would you be able to narrow down the cause from this info? I've removed the lint filter and cleaned/tightened. But nothing has changed.

Thanks!

Check the filters are clean and that the air ducts are not blocked. The sensors pick up temperature change and any restrictions will cause the machine to cycle on or off at the wrong times. Its possible the sensor itself is faulty.

The most common cause for a clothes dryer drum to turn slowly or not start turning at all, is usually due to a faulty 'start capacitor'.
The capacitor stores electricity to help get everything turning from the stopped position. Once turning, less effort is required by the motor to keep everything turning.
Other components like a broken drive belt, burnt out electric motor, broken wire among other things etc also need to be considered.
Cheers

Replace (repair) the exhaust sensor this looks like a transistor with the middle leg cut off. it is situated below the lint filter but can only accessed by removing the back panel, top panel (or rear screws to allow the removal of the drum). drum and then front panel to remove the connector from the mainboard. If you follow the exhaust tube once the back is off you will see a single phillips head screw that is the sensor. check the wires to the circuit board are not broken or dry joints or just replace it. sorry i had a spare machine i scavenged from to fix my problem so i dont know where to buy new.

Could be overheating because the exhaust vent is clogged. Check that out.
