The little black box inside the fan motor area is called the ballast and in most cases this is what goes out and needs replacement.

There's two options, depending on the brand of remote. The most common is that the reciever located in the fan ceiling canopy has the same switches. Check how they are set and match it on the remote. The other option is that the reciever matches the frequency of whatever the remote is set to. To set this you have to turn off the circuit, wait a minute or so, turn it back on. Then on the remote, hold down the "stop" button for a few seconds. It should be set. I'd check the receiver first though. I should mention also, that when they come from the factory, the switches are usually all in the OFF position (or possibly all in the ON position). Unless they were changed on installation (which may be the case if you have more than one remote controlled fan) they are probably set that way. Try that first.
