If the dish network remote control is universal it may work with limited functions. If the remote control has buttons labeled cd, receiver, cable or Aux etc. it might work. The manual will tell you for sure. It will also provide you with the proper code for the component to work.

Sounds like your receiver is going bad, contact DISH and have them replace it for you.

Did you connect to the output of a box? If so then it will usually come through your him I and doesn't require a scan. If cable set your menu setting to cable and not antenna.

If it's a silver colored VIP211, it's one of the older models and should be replaced soon. (They go defective very often.) Contact Dish and call them to have it replaced, they can either ship you out a replacement receiver or have a tech come out to replace it.
