Many nailers and staplers have a safety device that prevents firing unless the tool is pressed against the workpiece - to prevent them being fired like a weapon. The safety lockout is necessarily compact but is often badly designed and cheaply made and seem almost to be added as an afterthought. In my experience, when a stapler becomes cantankerous, moody, hit and miss, it is either an internal break in the power cord or the safety lockout (if fitted).
