I have recently had 3 episodes where the screen has gone black. A restart restores things. Is this a sign that something is going bad?

You are correct. This is either over heating or a bad component. The component is most likely a capacitor.

How can I change the password on my computer?

Robin Guzy, You will need to start the computer and tap the F2 key to enter the bios. Tab to where it reads the diskette drive and choose to disable the diskette drive. If you have a diskette drive you will need to replace it. Not many uses for diskette drives these days. For the password, you will need to try and remember the password or use a password recovery disk. This disk would have been created by you. If you did not create a password recovery disk you are going to either format and reinstall Windows or search the internet for programs that will recover your password. Type password and I have replaced the battery in my computer. The message I am receiving on the screen is Diskette drive 0 seek failure.

For the diskette drive 0 seek failure, does the computer skip past this error without difficulty ? If it does, then you may ignore it. It is caused probably by your replacing the battery having reset the BIOS which is thinking now it should find a floppy disk to boot from. If you haven't a floppy disk, or have floppy disk drive you will get this message. I do, but I ignore it. When you power up, you could try entering the BIOS setup, by pressing for example, the esc, F1, F2 or F8 keys - for your model I don't know which, you may find out from the internet, your manuals, or the Dell website/help or support - repetitively before the computer starts, ( from Dell support - "You can enter the system BIOS or Setup on a Dell PC by pressing F2 at the Dell loading screen").and somewhere the BIOS setup there should be the boot order change this to CD first (no CD inserted unless it is bootable), then USB if available (no media USB inserted, some USB devices are ok), the HDD. You should not set HDD first because this will give you big problems if it goes wrong and you need to boot from somewhere else. Put floppy disk after HDD and the message will disappear. I don't know about the password issue. I suggest you contact Dell support on this topic. How do I open the case and remove the hard drive?

Unplug the unit from electricity, wash & dry your hands, take steps to avoid you transmitting static electricity(look it up if you are not familiar). There are several sheet metal screws around the edge in the back of your CPU. Remove the ones that appear to join the outer lip to the inner lip all the way around. The front & back should now separate into 2 pieces. One the shell & the other the bulk of the system. The hard drive is usually located on a standard mounting shelf by itself with 1 or 2 small screws holding it in on the side with 2 wire connections in the back. The larger is a ribbon cable the is used for data & the other is the power cable. pull out the cables, unscrew the screws & the hard drive slides out. Some boxes may have something that blocks your access to screws, if so, temporarily remove them so you can work. If you are not sure of a potential problem...take a smart phone picture so you can see how it goes back together.

Why won't the DVD drive eject?

Rochellewar, Go to my computer and right click on the dvd drive and choose the Eject option. If that does not resolve the issue look to see if you have a small pin hole on the front of the DVD drive. If so, insert a paper clip into the hole to eject the drive. I bought a computer for my wife second hand and its locked with the administror disabledhow do I fix

If it is locked in the bios, power up the computer and start clicking F12 over and over real fast until the bios screen comes up. Then tab to the password and remove it. If the OS is locked, you'll have to reload the OS and have the key number available or you'll have to get a new copy of the OS.

Will not boot up from BIOS. Just goes in a loop and I have lost my rescue disc

Do you have access to another computer? If so you can download a recovery disc from several sources. Instructions are generally included on how to make a bootable disc/USB that you can use to restore and repair your system. Check out The Best Free Computer System Recovery Tools for a list of various options. I personally Like the ultimate boot CD but this might help you find an option that works for you. Godd luck!

Can't find the reset Password pin near the Battery

If you are prompted for the Windows password, this would mean that your Windows user name is password protected. This is separate from the BIOS password. Resetting the BIOS password on your computer will not reset your Windows password. If you are unable to recall your Windows password, or if you do not recall setting up one, try to leave it as blank and see if it works. If not, your other option is to restore your operating system through a previous restore point. **WARNING: Be sure to try to backup important files before you proceed as this can cause data to be lost.** Try to boot using your Windows Disc and perform a repair install or a full operating system reinstall. Another method is to use the factory restore option on your dell computer if it is still available. To do a factory restore, restart the computer and as soon as the Dell logo/screen shows up, hold down the CTRL key on the keyboard and press the F11 key a few times and release both keys. once you get to the screen where you can choose to restore to factory settings select Restore then press Enter. Let it go through the process and select FINISH once you get the message that it is completed .

F keys functions

F1 As a throwback to DOS days, you will find that the F1 key will often bring up a help menu. If you press F1 while working in a program, help for that program will usually appear. If you press F1 while at the Windows desktop or when the Windows Explorer is open, a Windows help screen will pop up. If you happen to be working in a program and would like to see the Windows help screen, simply press the Windows key (the key with the Windows logo on the bottom row of keys) on your keyboard and press F1 at the same time. F2 You can use the F2 key to rename an item when working in Windows. Highlight any folder or file, and press F2. You will then be able to type a new name for the object. After you type the new name, just click outside the name box or press the enter key to make the name change. This works just like right-clicking a file or folder and selecting Rename. F3 When you are working in Windows, the F3 key will open the Find Files window. F4 The F4 key has some very useful functionality. You can press F4 to open the Address bar when working in Internet Explorer. This will allow you to type the address of a Web page for quick access. You can also press the Alt key and the F4 key at the same time to close the open Window that you are currently working on. F5 The F5 key is the refresh key. You can press F5 when viewing a Web page to make sure that you have the most current version of that Web page. You can also use F5 when in Windows to refresh the screen. This can be a handy shortcut. If perhaps you are viewing the contents of a floppy disk and you insert a new floppy, your screen will still show the contents of the first floppy. Just press F5 to refresh the screen and see the contents of the floppy you just inserted. F6 This key is often used to move the cursor around the structure of the program. Pressing it will often cycle you from window to window. F7 The F7 key does not have any functionality in Windows. It may, however be used in some individual programs. To find out if it is available in the program you are using, bring up the program's help screen and type in the words function key. F8 The F8 key can be used to access Safe Mode if pressed during the computer's boot up process. This is a trouble-shooting mode which will start the computer with minimal drivers. F9 The F9 key does not have any functionality in Windows. It may, however be used in some individual programs. To find out if it is available in the program you are using, bring up the program's help screen and type in the words function key. F10 F10 is the key that is used to activate the menu bar in many programs. You can use F10 to highlight the first menu choice, and then use the arrow keys to move around the menus. Pressing the Shift key while pressing F10 will bring up the shortcut menu. This is similar to right-clicking on an object. F11 Press F11 when you are working in Internet Explorer and the window will open to full screen mode. This will make all the toolbars disappear and can be useful to see more information on the screen. Press F11 when you are in full screen mode will toggle you back to your normal view. F12 The F12 key does not have any functionality in Windows. It may, however be used in some individual programs. To find out if it is available in the program you are using, bring up the program's help screen and type in the words function key.

Dimension 4600 dvd drive keeps opening

Try this first - open up the BIOS part of the system. To do this, shut the computer off; wait at least 10 seconds; turn the computer back on and then press F2 when the Dell logo appears. Press continually until the message Entering Setup appears. In the Boot Order section, remove the CD/DVD drive from the boot order by clicking on Disable from the drop-down menu. If this doesn't fix it, please resubmit your question

How can I find a driver for internet explorer on windows xp?

Well internet explorer doesn't have a driver. Drivers are for hardware such as video cards, keyboards and mice, etc. If you are having problems with IE you can try re-installing it or upgrading here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/download-ie If you are having trouble connecting to the internet through IE then you may need to update the driver for your network adapter. That is about the best answer I can come up with since there really aren't any details to your problem. Try replying back with your issue and we can take a look at it.

My dell desktop was corrupted w a virus that progressively has brought it to a state where on start up it opens to an atypical looking blue screen w my mouse arrow the only visible thing on my screen

http://www.ehow.com/how_7153804_restore-dell-inspiron-2200.html Looks like you have to access recovery features as you power up, probably pressing CTRL and F11 repeatedly or whatever key combination is particular to your dell. A link below is to manuals and drivers for your machine. Bear in mind some recovery processes can wipe data to restore to factory defaults. If you can recover via a system restore point, you probably will not lose data. If not, your recovery may require going to factory defaults. If you manage to use a system restore point, you may yet have the viruses or malware hanging around. You might download an anti-malware program (portable version) to a usb stick and make use of it from that location. There is a means to boot the computer from a usb stick which has a linux rescue OS upon it. That would enable you to recover some data before trying something like having to go to factory defaults (it is too late then). http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/dimension-2200/manuals The above page will have some drivers you may need at some point. https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100604063422AAlbwaq If this machine was running XP, it probably had XP SP2 installed. But any updates after that are likely lost unless you go to a shop and have such put on. Microsoft is not going to do it. If you can connect to the internet if restores to XP SP2, you it possibly will ask to activate windows. See if you can do it by clicking "over the internet." Bear in mind you will have to reinstall something like Zonealarm as a firewall and AVG as an antiviral if you have gone to factory defaults. If you have gone to simply a system restore, try to save something of previously installed software keys, maybe using Belarc Advisor or Magic Jellybean. If you have gone to factory defaults, you will have to reinstall MS Office suite, for instance, if you had it. MIght as well download the current version of Firefox. Elsewise, you will be looking at a very old browser.
