2006 Dodge Dakota won't shift out of park with new stereo??
The issue of your 2006 Dodge Dakota not shifting out of park after installing a new stereo may be related to the interlock system. In many vehicles, there is a safety feature that requires the brake pedal to be pressed before shifting out of park. This feature is designed to prevent accidental shifting.
Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:
- Check the Brake Pedal Sensor: Ensure that the brake pedal sensor is properly connected and functioning. Sometimes, during stereo installation, wires or connectors related to the brake pedal sensor can be accidentally disconnected or damaged. Make sure all connections are secure and in good condition.
- Check for Misaligned Wiring or Short Circuits: Inspect the wiring around the stereo installation area. Ensure that there are no misaligned wires or short circuits that could be causing a disruption in the interlock system.
- Test without the Stereo: Temporarily disconnect the new stereo and see if the shifting issue persists. If the problem goes away, it's possible that there is a compatibility or wiring issue with the stereo installation that is interfering with the interlock system. In such cases, you may need to consult the stereo's manual or seek assistance from a professional car audio installer.
- Consult a Professional: If the issue persists or you are unable to troubleshoot it effectively, it is recommended to consult a professional mechanic or an authorized Dodge service center. They will have the expertise and diagnostic tools necessary to identify and resolve the issue.
I am installing after market stereo/wireless back up cam into a 2007 Dodge Dakota and wondering where to source power for cam receiver? All the instructions say are to connect to 12V source.
You should get an aftermarket installation harness for your new head unit, these are available at auto parts chains and Wal-Mart, online, etc. When you remove the stock stereo from your Dakota, it’ll have a plug or two that go to the truck’s wiring harness. The aftermarket wiring harness you’ll buy has identical ends so it plugs right in and the other end(s) will connect to the new stereo’s wiring that should be running out of the back of your new head unit. You can hook the BackUp Camera’s Power Wire in with your Head Unit’s Red(+) Power Wire as that’s a good spot since it’ll always have power when you need it to in that location. The BackUp Cameras usually have a “trigger” or “activation” wire that makes the camera come on and the Cameras I’ve installed always hook to your reverse light circuit or the truck’s neutral safety switch, so it’ll come on and display the camera view on your head unit’s Screen when you put the vehicle in reverse. A google search will tell you where and what color the wire is for this, for the reverse lights or neutral safety switch(usually under dash or under the steering column’s outer plastic cover between the steering wheel and the dash or instrument panel(speedometer, gauges, etc).
Definitely get the wiring harness for installing the aftermarket stereo, the only other way to do this is to make a big mess and you don’t want to do that since the harness is under $10.
So, no worries, this is simple and you’ll get it, just get the harness, and find out where the reverse light circuit is and wire the activation wire of the camera to it, maybe your camera only has one wire, if so that’s where it goes and you can disregard what I said above about running it with your new head units wiring(the red (+) Power Wire).
Go to AutoZone or your parts store of choice and ask for a harness to install an aftermarket stereo in your Dakota, they’ll hook you right up for a few dollars and you’ll be done in no time! Good Luck!

Hello. your changer is actually controlled by your vehicle computer. It may just take a few hours for it to reprogram itself after sitting idle. If it doesn't work after another 24 hours call your dodge dealership and ask to speak to the service department. The tech. there will be able to tell you if it needs to be reset. Regards, Joe

Sounds like your describing the overhead console display?
If totally blank, check the 20 amp yellow fuse #14 as a 1st step.
