This could be the fan or the switch that controls that defrost cycle. The only way to tell is to use a volt meter to see if there is electric current to the fan motor. IF there is current, replace the fan.

You have to trace where the noise is coming from. Usually tapping is from either the condensor fan hitting the shroud, they warp, or evaporator fan hitting ice.
