I cannot get video from my VHS through my canopus

I had this same problem. Took it back and got my money back. Was trying to use with iMovie. Was told I needed at least the ADVC300 (also known as Canopus). Not sure why, but the 300 did the trick. Could be other problems, though. Maybe your firewire is bad, or the port on the computer. Or the connectors you're using between the VCR and converter. I hope it isn't too late to exchange any of the equipment you bought. Usually it's 14 days for these things. Good luck! It is hard to pin down these problems!

How do I export out

Hello

Please tell me exactly what you want to do. Do you want to convert the digital files from your Mac to analog? The Canopus ADVC Converter converts non-digital videos to digital videos, not the other way around.

My computer does not recognize

Hi there,
Does the camera work on other imaging softwares like yahoo messenger, skype etc.
Also make sure that no other software like the ones I mentioned above is running because imaging devices can only be accessed by one software at a time.
If after you've turned off these softwares and the video capture device still does not detect the camera I would suggest borrowing another camera from a friend or someone you know to make sure that this is not a bad box.
Hope this helps!

if you are having trouble with a your computers sound
if your computer came with a motherboard disc the sound drivers could be on it click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to sound, video and game controllers you might see a yellow question mark? Right click to reinstall drivers or uninstall click start control panel sounds and audio, volume, advanced, speakers make sure you have selected the (((appropriate speakers))) also audio you will find 3 drop down lists make sure you have the correct settings there also click start control panel sounds and audio devices you can adjust the volume there also select speaker volume you can change your settings there you can also tick in the box place icon in taskbar if his does not fix the problem

have you tried this control panel sounds and audio, volume, advanced, speakers select the appropriate speakers from the drop down list or navigate to the device manager scroll to system devices + to expand, system speaker right click properties then select use this device (enable) also you might check the speakers plug/outlet is usually at the back of the computer you will have to open up the computer to check the lead attached to the rear of the input plug make sure the connection is good try cleaning your computer of dust using a fine air blower from a compressor making VERY sure that there is no MOISTURE in the air line specifically around the sound card and the CPU central processing unit dust causes static to build up in a computer make sure you have an earth ******** before touching any parts inside your computer hope this helps

I am trying to capture

Greetings hwgirl20 - I suspect strongly that you are trying to capture a copy protected DVD (Macrovision Copy Protection) and the LED indicates that. Actually it would be the LED blinking and the analog and DV input lights are probably dimming.

There is no way around the copy protection protection on the Canopus but there is a relatively simple way to get around it so you can use the video in Final Cut.

You can use Freeware like HandBrake to copy your DVD to your hard drive and then decrypt it and then use it in Final Cut. Handbrake you can get HERE. Handbrake does not get rid of the copy protection but it explains how to do it HERE.

Happy Editing and Thanks for using Fix Ya.

Raster scan misalignment occurs toward

Hi Chris - Those scan lines (overscan) are common capturing from VHS, Hi8, or other analog video soiurce. They were actually "built in" so to speak to make sure that the video image would cover the screen of an (analog) TV set where the amount of overscan on different sets varied.

To clarify, are we talking about lines horizontal (left to right) or vertical (up and down)? your words skewed left or right threw me a bit..

To continue, it's not a defect in the ADVC-100 and I don't know whether the 110 would be any help, The 300 does give you the tools to correct this kind of problem. If you are going to use this video for making DVD/VCDs it's possible the scan lines would not show on the display at all. It's worth a quick one off to find out.

Regards,

Thanks for this thread, I am so frustrated. I

i love a well informed person with computers. so many people post here and don' t give any other information; and for that i thank and congratulate you. now for your resolution. i have read up on this particular unit and with this one i have found several hundred issues with the quality. especially when viewing on larger LCD screens.
knowing this, i suggest the upgraded model. Canopus ADVC 300 Analog / Digital Video Converter......http://www.firewire-1394.com/canopus-advc-300.htm
now with that said you mentioned you have a pinnacle av/dv card. my question involves the issue with your firewire. on most cards of this nature they want to be "alone". meaning that the card wants to be in a pci slot to itself with no neighbors. i suggest putting it in the very first slot available to avoid this and then putting your other cards in the remaining slots. this card you are using is also a little outdated. here is a better card.... http://cgi.ebay.com/Compro-Videomate-C500-PCI-DV-Analog-Capture-Card-2-/170586107840?pt=AU_Components&hash=item27b7b96fc0#ht_1080wt_905
If you have any problems let me know and please leave positive feedback for me. Jethro

New Canopus ADVC 110 being

Canopus 110 has a small chip built in that detects when you're trying to transfer copyrighted material (such as a tape of a movie). If it detects it, a small red light comes on, and the footage you copy is black or distorted. If you have old movies that you want to copy to a DVD for personal use, this is bad news.
However, there is a way past this security feature, and it's built into the system. When you first turn Canopus on, simply press the select button down for roughly twenty seconds. Now the system will ignore copyright concerns, and you can copy all the movies you want, until you turn Canopus off.

Make sure the tapes are still good by doing a playback from camcorder or something you can watch.

How are you connecting to the computer? Firewire is the best and ensures transmission is fast enough to keep up. USB is too slow. Also the computer needs lots of memory and defragmented disk space, for the mpeg conversion. The A to D conversion is only part of the whole transfer process, and the majority happens in software on the computer.

I would also suggest taking it to the place you bought it from, and let them try it on one of your tapes. If the unit was defective, they will be able to compare results then easily, and hopefully it will be covered by warranty.

I also read that it does not come with an external power supply, but that it is supposed to be necessary for firewire to work. So it is recommended to buy one. I also read that if you use a 4 or 6 wire firewire connector, that the power supply is not required. But I would bet it is computer dependent, since some do not provide as much power as others, to the Firewire port. Perhaps the lesson here is that cable quality makes a difference. If you have trouble figuring out the external power requirements, they appear to be anything between 5 volts and 12 volts.

Make sure everything is set correctly, such as NTSC, vs PAL.
Also, do not connect more than one Firewire cable at a time, for best results.
