That sounds like a serious problem. Recommend you replace your pan assembly and paddles. What make and model is your bread machine?

When your machine started kneading did you notice if the ingredients were actually mixing? Sometimes the drive belts on bread machine break and there is no mixing (the paddle doesn't spin around)

Which program are you using, white, wheat, french, etc.? Black and Decker bread makers I think ever start right away. They warm the oven gently for awhile. If your machine hasn't started mixing within 30 minutes of pressing start, only then do you have a problem. That is true for the Wheat program for sure.

A couple of ideas. Firstly get fresh yeast, I use active dry yeast from the bulk barn, it is way cheaper than "breadmaker yeast" and I use a bit more. When I want more rise to my bread, I add an egg, which works wonders.

Clean the shaft AND the inside of the paddle hole until it is 101 percent clean. Give BOTH a shot of non-stick spray when you use the machine.

It's easy enough to remove your thermostat. Mine's shorted and never opens the circuit so it gets too hot. That said: I can't find a replacement from mfg or appliance repair sites. For 20 bucks, I may just (hate to) buy a new one.
