I have had problems occasionally with connecting a second monitor, too. Hook up both monitors. In the Windows control panel, look up display (or right click on your desktop and select display). Is the second monitor shown? If not, click "detect" and see if it shows up. I have had a couple times where I clicked on the monitor icon in "display" and then clicked "enable this monitor" and it started working. If not, then try switching the cords so your working monitor is the second one. try again and see if it show up. If not, the problem is probably with the video card or video card driver. Make sure that the audio cable from the computer is in the correct audio output (small green socket) and connected into the monitor. You can test the monitor speakers with an MP3 player or a smartphone. Also check that the volume on the monitor is up.

F6 normally operates external screen or off the control panel if windows is on

If you can, check the display settings. Some graphics cards have an option for dual monitors. Sounds like the card is seeing only 'monitor 2'. If you have more than one monitor port, try plugging both monitors in. If no luck, you may have to boot into BIOS at power-up and configure from the menu. But be careful not to fiddle with unknown settings in BIOS - this is the 'nerve center' of the computer and could cause total digital catastrophe. If not sure, don't. Or get expert to help re-configure.

Obviously changed something. Check to make sure you haven't inadvertently muted the speakers. Go on your computer in the sound settings in control panel (manage audio devices) and ensure you have them set right.
