with about 1 ft. of tape that is badly wrinkled and sometimes I just ruin the tape. What will solve my problem Reset the unit by unplugging it/repluggin it after 30 seconds, and then use a VHS cleaner

tape may be defective in some way such as wrinkled or slack in the cassette. If other tapes are handled the same way, the fault probably is in the player mechanism. It’s not the tape, mine is doing it
