Migrating software and data to new computer

Please can anyone tell me how to transfer my software and data from an old Windows NT computer and serial cradle to a new Windows XP computer with a USB cradle? I need to download/transfer the Palm Desktop software, Chapura PocketMirror and Settings, and data files. I would like to be able to synchronise with Outlook (as before on the old computer) on the new computer without losing or duplicating data. Thanks for any help or advice.

Assume that your Visor is your data respository. So you should make sure that you have an up-to-date synchronization from the NT PC. Now get the XP compatible software for your Visor from the palmOne website and install it on the XP box. I assume that you will be synching via USB this time - this is the default setup when you install the software. Hopefully you still have the USB cradle that came with the Visor. You can still use serial sync with XP but you should try to take advantage of the speed of USB on the new PC. Download for XP & Visors: http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/visor/win_desktop_401.html Once the software is installed, sync with the new computer and all your data should be copied from the Visor to your PC in the first synchronization. By the way, Outlook shouild be installed on the new computer before you install the Visor software; otherwise the installer will not offfer to install the PocketMirror conduits.

Files and settings transfer

What sort of problems are you encountering ?

Since newer versions of hardware, computers and operating systems like Microsoft Windows frequently hit the market, most of us are tempted to upgrade our computers. While upgrading your computer or new version of Microsoft Windows, you may find it a hassle to move all the files and settings to the new computer. Transferring files, user settings and applications to a new computer takes days if done manually. There are, however, a few ways of transferring files and settings successfully.

Windows Easy Transfer Wizard Transferring files between computers or operating systems is a long process and some files may not be fully transferred if you lack technical expertise. Windows Easy Transfer Wizard helps simplify the process for transferring files to new computers. It is a built-in migration tool within Windows. This tool provides an interface for such migration and does so with a comprehensive wizard that takes you on a guided tour of the process. It can be accessed by clicking on the "Start" menu, then "Accessories," then "System Tools" and then "Windows Easy Transfer." All files transferred will be restored in a similar way as they were on your old computer. This method is only useful for solving problems with transferring files, not settings. b> Laplink PCMOVER b> The migration of settings can be more of a problem than that of transferring files. Settings like registry values, user preferences or activation keys are difficult to move without a transfer tool. Laplink's PCMOVER is a tool used for the transfer of files and settings from PC to PC. This software application has a comprehensive wizard that allows you to transfer user settings, personal files and programs with settings. It can be used with any Microsoft Windows-based computer and you can also use it while transferring between operating systems. A PCMOVER will create a backup-type image file that can then be moved by a CD/DVD or USB flash drive. It provides a fast and efficient file and settings transfer. b> Other Transfer Methods b> There are other ways to transfer Windows files and settings to avoid leaving data behind, as well. One is by the means of an Easy Transfer Cable, which is a USB-to-USB bridge cable that connects two computers together. You can also use a USB flash drive, an external hard disk drive or a CD/DVD for transferring files and settings -- though all these means are time consuming. Most users also use a wireless network for migrating files and settings. Software applications are preferred over all these methods, however, because they are cost-effective and they take less time in transferring. b> Solutions for other Transfer Problems b> While transferring files and settings with the help of software applications, other problems may arise. There are solutions for these problems as well. One of the problems commonly faced by users is that some settings may not be transferred. To prevent this problem, you must install that program before you run the Windows Easy Transfer. Another problem faced is some files transferred are unreadable on the new computer. This occurs when a program for that file type has not been installed in the new computer yet. At times, users may see files or settings not being transferred at all. This will occur only when the files are not compatible with that version of Windows. Hope this helps.

Migrating XP to Windows 7 (Using your Network)

If you are thinking of buying a new PC and trying to replace an old XP system to a new Windows 7, you might want to transfer your old favorite files to your new computer. Either transferring through a Easy Transfer cable, Network, or via USB

This procedures assumes that your old XP is still working and connected to your home or office network. and your new Win 7 is also connected as well to your networkBoth of your system and computer must be connected to the same network, either in the office or home, because it is easier to transfer files in this way, effectively and efficiently, this is practical than using USB flash drive or any external disk, though the process is similar.

Ensure that you have the Win7 InstallationDVD, or the Easy Transfer Software fromMicrosoft website, ready to be installed on your XP system. but be aware this is for 64 bit version system only, please visit Microsoft website search and download Windows easy Transfer and select "x86" in the file name for 32 bit or 64 bit, install this the same way you've done with ordinary software. In your Win 7 however, this software is automatically installed so do not bother yourself.

In this instance you will be asked if whether you want to transfer your whole data from all user accounts or to just specific user only, in this process you can also select specific files to transfer, but in order to transfer all accounts, both of your XP and WIN 7 must be logged as an Administrator.

So this procedure is Migrating through NETWORK, the other two procedure is Easy Cable Transfer and USB, external Hard disk.

5e79a5b.jpg
1- Prepare both systems and ensure both are connected to the network and working, Start the XP computer and log in as an Admin
2- IN XP , Open up the and start the Windows Easy Transfer DVD, and look or browse for SupportMigwiz. if you have downloaded this simply select Start> All Program> Windows Easy Transfer for Win 7, it will load automatically. Simply read the screen for additional info and click Next
3- A new screen pops out and please select a Network as an option to transfer
4- Click This is my OLD COMPUTER, Still in XP Windows Easy Transfer will then generate a password for the transferring process, because in order to transfer files through the network you will be required to enter a password (record the KEY)

caae297.jpg

After you enter the key, at this time Windows Easy Transfer makes the connection and scans the Windows XP system's contents and components. Once this is over, you can practically choose which data you want to transfer, or you want to import, just like customizing the items you wish to transfer. After you have decided which is which, click Transfer, then a progress bar will appears the process occurs.

The final screen will then show up indicating the process is complete. Confirm to see if the file you have chosen was actually transferred, then close all window, including the Easy Transfer Windows.

Restart your computer, please. Congratulations!
