I've been happily married to my Pentax 67 for many long and satisfying years but Lady Curiosity recently persuaded me to purchase a Pentax *ist DS. Now I'm very happy with the *ist DS but it has developed a curious habit of assassinating SD flash cards, and my bank manager and I would prefer that it didn't. So far it has exterminated two 256MB SD cards; the first execution happened when I needlessly reformatted my 'Peak' high-speed card after a dozen shots (operator error!)and the *ist DS steadfastly said "Memory card error"; the second execution occurred when I deleted all of the images on my Sandisk high speed card and again the *ist DS steadfastly said "Memory card error". In neither instance did I abuse the SD card by pulling it out or switching the camera off while transferring data etc and I religiously followed the instructions, but both cards are now useful only as bookmarks. Strangely, I am able to use 128MB Multimedia cards in the *ist DS without a problem (although the literature doesn't mention that you can!). Has anyone had a similar experience with cameras or flash cards, or am I inadvertantly doing something grossly stupid? Any ideas...?
I've used Sandisk Ultra II 512M cards, a PQI 1G and a Transcend 1G card (all high speed rated) in the *istDS. I've done about 1500 exposures now, many RAW, and have done several rounds of upload to my computer. No problems at all. These same cards work flawlessly in a Panasonic FZ10 as well. Either you have had a bit of bad luck, two defective SD cards in a row, or have a *istDS with a stuck or bad memory card controller. Try using the Reset command in the Set Up Menu, see if that helps. BTW, always format SD cards with the camera once before you start using them.
