How do i connect my new computer to a linksys model wrt54g? I have a new hp Pavilion g computer with windows 7

Make the FixYa experience better for everyone by voting.
Hi,
My name is Ben and I'm your guru, i.e., mentor, an influential teacher or popular expert: a management guru. - origin from Sanskrit, 'weighty, grave', for today.
Subject: Instructions for connecting to a router
Customer's exact description: how do i connect my new computer to a linksys model wrt54g? I have a new hp Pavilion g computer with windows 7
Discussion: Tjhanks for letting me know that you are running Windows 7. Most people never mention the OS. This will be a three (3) phase solution. It is imperative that each step be followed in order.
First Step: Let's make certain that your operating system is ready to accept your router. Click on the following link and Microsoft will analyze your system and correct any deficiencies. Microsoft Fixit Site.

Second Step: Make certain that your router is up-to-date.
Updates are regularly posted on the manufacturer's site to fix issues you encountered while attempting to use their device. The following will guide you on how to keep your device updated and working properly.
These are the common reasons why you need to do an upgrade:
• Dropping or intermittent connection • Fix the bugs and known issues with the current firmware or driver version • Basic Troubleshooting did not work
NOTE: For basic troubleshooting tips in wirelessly connecting to your router, please refer to your user manual.
Firmware updates are required especially if you start experiencing connection problems within your local network. An updated firmware also fixes the bugs of its previous version as well as providing new functionalities for the device. However, this should only be done after doing some basic troubleshooting that did not work.
There's and easy way to check on outdated firmware, drivers and software. Just click on the following link and download a small program named SlimDrivesr Free: CLICK HERE
NOTE: Updating the router's firmware is not recommended if there are no connectivity issues.
Adapters
A driver update for your adapter is necessary in order to enhance the wireless performance and functionality of your device. This is recommended especially if the adapter is not working properly after you updated the router or the computer itself. A corrupted driver will cause your adapter to stop working.
QUICK TIP: For both Ethernet and wireless adapters, you need to download drivers, while for devices such as routers, gateways and network access storage, you need to download the firmware.
Third Step: Connecting to the Internet using a Router
Choose a convenient location to begin installing your router, such as an open floor space or table. This does not need to be the permanent location of the router. For wireless routers, it may be necessary to re-position the unit after installing it as the signals may not reach all areas needed.
• Unplug the power to your Internet modem. • Power down your computer(s). • Plug the power in to your router. • Connect your Internet modem to the router. The cable plugs into the router jack named "WAN" or "Internet". Turn on your Modem. • Connect one computer to the router. Even if the router is a wireless model, connect this first computer to the router via a network cable. • Turn on the computer. • From the computer connected to the router, open your web browser. Enter the router's address, http://192.168.2.1, and press Enter on your keyboard. • Click Login. The router does not ship with a password, so just click Submit. To configure the router to connect to the Internet, you must enter information provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) into the "Connection Type" section in the left-hand column under the "Internet WAN" heading of the router's configuration page. If using DSL Internet, you may need to enter the PPPoE username and password. Likewise, if you have been issued a static IP address by your provider, the static IP fields (including network mask and gateway) must also must be set in the router.
Since this is a wireless router, change the network name (referred to as SSID). While the router comes to you with a network name set at the factory, you may want to use something more familiar for your network. Read Changing the Router's Wireless Channel and SSID -- or some other similiar language in your user guide --for a description of this process.
Verify that this computer can connect to the Internet properly. Open a new web browser and visit a few Internet sites such as Google.com or Yahoo.com.
Finally, configure additional network security features as desired to guard your systems against Internet attackers.
That's the three step program to solve this particular problem.
If you are still having problems, follow the steps outlined in the Windows operating instructions. Unfortunately, most individuals buy computers with the software installed by the manufacturer and don't receive the full manual.
1. Open Internet Explorer 2. Click on TOOLS 3. Click on INTERNET OPTIONS 4. Click on CONNECTIONS 5. Click on SETUP 6. Click on I WANT TO SET UP MY INTERNET CONNECTION MANUALLY 7. Click on NEXT 8. Click on I CONNECT THROUGH A LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN) 9. Click on NEXT 10. Click on NEXT [this is not a typo] 11. Click on TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET IMMEDIATELY .........; and, 12. Click on FINISH

You should now be connected.
All the best,

Use an Ethernet cable to connect the cable-modem to the 'WAN' (or 'INTERNET') port on the router.
Use another Ethernet cable to connect one of the 'LAN' (or 'NETWORK') ports on the router to the network-port on your computer.

Turn the cable-modem on, and wait for its lamps to settle-down to a steady pattern.

On your computer, you should be able to access the Internet.

Also, look at the colour of the EIGHT wires at each of each Ethernet cable.
The order of the coloured wires should be IDENTICAL at both ends.

The solution I'm suggesting works in my business (LAN installations) about 95% of the time. I trust that it will work for you.

Let's see if I can help you.

Begin by turning on your computers and your router

? Make sure that you are using the latest drivers. You can download the latest driver/firmware from Driver Downloads Database.[email protected].
? Open Internet Explorer on the computer that you cannot see;
? Click on 'Tools';
? Click on 'Internet Options';
? Click on 'Connections';
? Click on 'Setup'
? Click on 'I want to set up my Internet connections manually . . .';
? Click on 'Next';
? Click on 'I connect through a local area network (LAN);
? Clock on 'Next'
? Click on 'Next' [This is not an error];
? Click on 'No';
? Click on 'Next';
? Click on 'To connect to the Internet immediately . . .; and,
? Click on 'Finish'.

That should have you online. However, if it doesn't get you on line, do the following: Click on tools again. Click on 'Diagnose Connection Problems' and follow the instructions.

The last choice is to use the Setup Wizard. It seldom works for me but you might more luck than poor me. Here are the instructions:

The Connect to the Internet wizard will guide you through the steps of setting up an Internet connection.

Open the Connect to the Internet wizard by:

• Clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button
• Click on Control Panel.
• In the search box, type network,
• Click "Network and Sharing Center"
• Click Set up a new connection or network
• Then double-click "Connect to the Internet".
