Re: Axim Battery
The battery that comes with Axim is the standard 1440mAh; an extended battery with something like 3400mAh is indeed available as an option.
According to some reviews of Axim, the standard battery is good for 8-10 hours of normal usage. One review said they played MP3s non-stop for 6 hours 22 minutes before the MP3 player stopped because of not enough power, but Axim still had another 16% on the battery which was good enough for about another full hour of standard usage.
Audio and video will both cut down on how much you can expect from the battery, video much more so than audio. If you are planning on watching full length movies on an airplane from a 1GB Microdrive, I think getting the extended battery would be a good idea. I'll give this a try myself as soon as I get my Axim, which should be... drum roll... the day before Xmas, according to Dell.

Check to see that it is in fact charging. If the power button light stays amber and never goes green, it could be battery, PDA or charger. If you do get a green, that pretty rules out charger/cradle. If the extended battery isn't an ORIGINAL Dell, and is more than a year old, it's likely the battery. 2 quick checks: 1) Try a standard life battery. If you get exaclty the same result, your Dell's got issues. Might only need a firmware re flash. But if your going to do it, I recomend going to the LennySH WM6.1, it's faster, more stable, cool battery indicator & other goodies. 2)See if the battery is bulging; if it is, it's time is near. There seems to be a real problem with the eBay'ish extended batteries. On the other hand, I've heard a few guys report ok battery life, and just a low *reading*. Dell batts seem to give the best life, the aftermarket just doesn't have it together. If you dare, Lenny's 6.1 can be found on Mobilitysite, read up on it lot's if you decide to go that way.
My Axim X30 would not turn on using battery power but would turn on when connected through charger adapter.
1. Connect AC adapter directly to the charger adapter and then to the Axim X30 and to the electrical outlet.
2. Charge battery until power button is solid green.
3. Press the power button to power on.
4. Remove cable from cable connector leaving the cable connector connected to the Axim X30. The Axim X30 will remain powered on.
5. Turn the Axim X30 off.
6. Turned the Axim X30 on using battery power.
7. Remove cable connector from Axim X30.
Assuming the battery is not dead, try taking the battery out for a few seconds to be sure the PDA is turned all the way off. Put the battery back in and close the back. Use the stylus to hold the reset button in (on the back) while you press and hold the power button. If the battery is dead do this while it is connected to the charger. It should diplay a message telling you to press the mail button (to the left of the cursor control button) to the reset to factory defaults. Caution this will erase everything in the built in memory including any programs you installed after you recieved it.
You can get a replacement rechargeable one at batterytrader, here is the link - Dell Axim X51 battery, they also do a couple of extended versions just search on the site, this also fits the dell axim x50 pda batteries
Some people have said that the original ppc2002 ROM has battery draining problems. If this is something new, perhaps it is a bad battery. Ebay for a new one.
If you think it might be a software problem and you have ppc2002-also known as Windows Mobile 2002, upgrade your Axim with the A04 ROM:http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R63937&SystemID=PDA_AXIM_X5&servicetag=&os=PPC&osl=en&deviceid=4434&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=3&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=7&fileid=82832
I have the same problem. I've found that the Innopocket magnum case will hold the cover in place and pretty much stop it doing this. Unfortunately, the case won't fit if you have an extended battery.
I've tried taping down the cover with some success, but the hard case worked better.
it is all going to depend on what you are doing with it word prossing dousent need as much power as you would to surf the web with a WiFi card becouse you half to run the card and the program
but with just the unit its self i would give it 16 hours on maby 24 if it has a battry saver and that is with the 1440MAH
