Panasonic NN-S255 Microwave Oven Logo
Anonymous Posted on Aug 02, 2011

I have a Panasonic Model #NN-S255 microwave oven. The button you push to open the door does not open the door. It's like there is no resistance when you push the button therefore it does not push up the latch hooks. I opened that compartment and there are no visible broken pieces inside. The microwave works perfect except for this. I don't want to have to buy a new microwave just because the door latch isn't functioning properly. Can you help?

I have the door open, that was never my problem. I can manually open it from inside just fine when I take the panel off. The inner workings do not appear broken at all.

I have never had a problem getting the door open. I can open it just fine with the key panel removed. All parts inside appear to be unbroken to me.

The part you referenced is there and appears to be ok but it fails to pushup high enough to trigger the door release unless that is what you are referring to as what slipped out of place. Is there a diagram somewhere that shows where that piece slides into?

Can you explain how the part "fits in" to the door latch. If I use my finger it pops open just fine.

Hello,To get the door open and salvage your dinner, take a long thin blade ( I used a frosting spreader) and insert from the bottom between the door and the oven frame on the side with the latches (usually next to the control panel). You may have to pry the bottom of the door open just a bit. The object is to push up the lower door latch (which is connected to the upper door latch) and manually open the door. You may have to try a few times but this worked perfectly for me and saved dinner. Obviously the door latch needs to be repaired but this solves the immediate problem of dinner being held hostage by a recalcitrant microwave.
wish you good luck,
take care.

Hello & Welcome to FixYa
I believe as the fuse is fine and everything works fine so the problem is with the door switch that is bad and needs replacement. If you want you can test the switch before replacement. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.

Likely this part failed because the door hinges have got a bit out of line, allowing the door to drop slightly, so the catch mechanism won't quite disengage. So, your part has broken or slipped out of place.

Unplug the unit and remove the cover. If the latch has popped out of the slot you can put it back, you will have to open the door to do this, just lift on the door hooks and you can open it, or replace it. Try to find this part replcement in this link repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Open-Lever

NOTE: In any case, don't touch the capacitor, 20000 volts there and can kill you.

Hope this helps.

Oven door on PanasoniPanasonic microwave Model NN-SD277 won't open when pressing open button

I just had that problem. It is the plastic workings. One of the plastic posts that holds the pivoting lever had to be epoxied. That plastic rejects crazy glue, don't waste your time. Just epoxy and as much as you think can fit under the electronics and the metal plate you will have to pull out.

My suggestion is take pictures of every step so that you can hook all the electrics back up. There are some testy switches that must be unsnapped too.

Yes, to take down the face you must have the unit fully accessible - the bolts are accessible only from the rear.

Can't open microwave door

It sounds like the push to open lever is cracked or broken. You have to remove the 'wrapper' to open the door manually from the inside to check the 'door keys' or door hooks to make sure that they are in tact. Then, check the door opening lever between the 'push to open button' and the lower door key.

Panasonic NN-ST666W Microwave oven

What usually breaks is the door open lever, but it may be that the rear of the door open button and the face of the door open lever are worn to the point where they will not actuate.

On a counter top model, the outer cover will need to be removed to diagnose and repair this.

On an over-the-range model, only the control panel needs to be
removed in most cases.

Please unplug the oven first.

If you or someone you know wants to look into this, we have critical safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

Once it is apart, you'll be able to see how the door open button would press against the door open lever, which would then lift up against the door latch heads (hook-like projections on the door) and the door should open.
