Hi. I found best and fast way to take off caps. Taking around 1 min to do that, taking hammer and screwdriver, screwdriver putting in place with cut and hitting couple times in one side and other. After couple hits they popping out by self. Done four wheels in 5 min. Thanks

I found the solution to removing the axle caps! Pry off the red plastic cap and use a Dremel tool with a heavy grinding wheel to cut off the metal cap. Took five minutes to remove two axle caps!!!

Tools required
Hammer, flathead, Vise grips.
1. Lay car on side upside down with top of facing your lap.
2.Push wheel up until rod sticking out as far as possible.
3.Vise grips close to lowest setting grip the exposed rod just below acorn nut.
4. Have spouse, partner, or buddy hold Vise grips. Single parent, no worries, rest Vise grips against knee.
5. Take flat head screwdriver and slide in between opening of Vise grips from outward facing side, positioning it underneath acorn nut.
6. While holding rod secured, and screwdriver in place. Strike end of screwdriver with hammer.
7. Release Vise grips, turn rod. Repeat 1-6 until removed.

I just re-did the front wheels on my grandson's Cozy Coupe. It's a very old Coupe, that had totally seized front wheels. I removed the plastic decorative 'hubcap' (black, on mine) with large pliers, twisting it off. Note that they would NOT go back on, so there may be a more elegant method. If my 1-year old complains about no decorative hubcap, tough luck! I then removed the metal wheel retainers that pinch onto the axle (and actually hold the wheel in place) by GENTLY shimmying them off with a large slot (flat blade) screwdriver, BIT-BY-BIT, rotating as I shimmied - raise it a little bit at the 6 o'clock position, then move the screwdriver to 9 o'clock and raise a smidgen more, then 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6, 9, c. After about 10 or so tries, off it came. Be careful: one sprung off and flew about 10 feet onto the lawn, although my wife was sharp eyed enough to find it. This retaining clips went back on no problem. Once off, I had to wire brush and Dremel-stone down the built-up corrosion on the axle, until the wheel rotated freely. Then a dab of axle grease, replace the wheel, and re-install (the rusty old used) wheel retainers the same way I took them off: push a bit here, a nit there, rotating around until they were ALMOST flush with the wheel. Don't push them on too tight, or they will bind the (front) wheel, leave just the slightest little bit of play.

Try replacing the screw. If you cant, get a long thin bolt and nut to replace it.

The caps are a type of "acorn nut". Check a local hardware store (not the big guys) for this type of fastener and bring the shaft with you to get the correct size. These should not cost more than about $.50 each.

HI, For anyone still wondering I took mine off today to get ready to paint the cozy coupe. I used a strong vice grip type pliers such as Alloy Steel Locking Pliers but large channel locks might give you enough grip too. I then grabbed the rim with ones side of the pliers and the other end was more or less on the little nipple of the cap to sort of pry it and bend the rim up and away from the hubcap. I did tha on the axle cap on 4 opposing sides. Seemed to loosen them up enough that I could spin them off easily whild holding the opposite axle cap with a vice grip type wrench. Now to look for what size the caps are to order another off brand axle cap. Saw some black ones but want to make sure they are 3/8 inch which I'm assuming they are.
Also 3 1/2" by 1/4" rubber binders work great wrapped around the outside wheels to buffer noise and vibration on the pavement. Wrapped a bunch around the tires. A dollar something from Walmart .. Zig zagged some glue and have held up more than a summer season. Was so amazing the first time out without all the noise pushing my son with a hoverboard.ha
