Had exactly the same issue - working fine until ink cartridge changed (kodak for kodak - not a copy). Then can only get 'print head error message'.
Multiple attempts to remove and re-install, power on/off etc. but can't shift the error message. New print head more expensive than a new printer!
The black print head most likely is blocked with dried ink. Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent ink drying out and blocking the print head nozzles. If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive. It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer than replace the print head.
please have at least 2 set of black ink cartridge to determine the problem where in print head area or ink cartridge itself. if two black ink cartridge inserted and still same problem you can now focus problem with the print head. change as possible.
On this machine you have to install inks with power on and use the ink button and choose replace ink. If you just plug them in it won't register and reset the counts. You may need to run clean cycles at least twice to get proper colors.
My MFC-420CN acts up occationally. Remove the new cartridge, hold it as you would to install it, Rotate it to the right about 45°. Snap it with the back of a finger (dislodges any air bubbles in ink feed). Reinstall cartridge (ensure it is fully seated. This works for both Brother cartridges and the eforcity cartridges I've been using for the past couple of years. HTH

The printer will take a little quantity of color ink though you are printing in black in order to get good quality. Hence it is not possible to print with just black ink cartridge without color cartridge.
Thanks for quick reply. Was gonna buy ink anyway . Just stuck in the moment U know.
Good to know.. Thanks
