I have a Samsung Laser Printer ML 1860. It seems reluctant to work with Linux. The previous one ML 1420 (from memory) worked like a dream

Thank you very much. I am rather slow at learning about the problems that can occur. My oldest son is a wizard with computers and networks, but he resides a fair hike away, over 1000 miles to be exact. I try to bug him as little as possible, but still seek his advice occasionally. I do not like being too much of a pest.
    All the best

Hi,
Have you download the latest unified driver? download it from samsung and install it. Or uninstall the present samsung printer installation then repair the permission on your linux machine then reinstall the printer with the latest unified driver. Download the smart panel afterwards.
you can get the drivers here: Linux Unified Driver
Hope this works for you.

ML-1860. What does red light indicate?

The presence of a red light on the printer can indicate different things depending on its behavior and the specific model. Here are some common reasons for a red light on the Samsung ML-1860:
  1. Error or Issue: If the red light is solid or blinking, it might indicate an error or issue with the printer. This could be related to a paper jam, low toner, a cover not properly closed, or any other hardware problem.
  2. Low Toner: In some cases, a red light might indicate that the printer's toner is running low or needs to be replaced. Check the printer's control panel or software utility for any low toner warnings.
  3. Printer Offline: If the red light is on, and the printer is not responding to print commands, it might be offline or not properly connected to the computer or network.
  4. General Status Indicator: Some printers have a red light that serves as a general status indicator. This light might be on during normal printer operation and is not necessarily indicating an error.
To determine the specific reason for the red light on your Samsung ML-1860 printer, follow these steps:
  1. Check Printer Display: If your printer has a display panel, check if any error messages or warnings are displayed. The display can provide valuable information about the printer's status.
  2. Check the User Manual: Refer to the printer's user manual or documentation for information about the meaning of the red light and troubleshooting steps.
  3. Inspect Printer: Physically inspect the printer for any paper jams, open covers, or other visible issues that might be causing the red light.
  4. Check Toner Level: Check the printer's control panel or software utility to see if the toner level is low or depleted. If necessary, replace the toner cartridge with a new one.
  5. Ensure Connectivity: If the printer is connected to a computer or network, ensure that the connections are secure, and the printer is set to "online" mode.
  6. Restart Printer: Try restarting the printer by turning it off and unplugging it from the power source. Wait for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on again

Samsung printer ML 1860 knocking noise

The only answer I'm afraid is to visually inspect to see what's knocking. Look for misfeeds and paper jams, they are the most likely problems

Reset samsung ml 1860

Dear
The ML-1860 yields 1500 A4 pages at 5% toner coverage.
To reset the cart you have to purchase the toner chip or reprogram(if you have experience). Also you may search the Internet for firmware fix which is violation of warranty.
Thanks.

Compatable with Mac?

Get the ESP Postscript and the Samsung GDI driver from linuxprinting.org and install the two. Go add a USB printer in the OSX print center, hold the option key to get to the “Advanced Options” and add a “Samsung” printer, chose the ML-1210 driver and you’re done.

here is the link for drivers above http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/samsung-gdi
