For some reason I have been under the impression that my 540 Jornada has Access on it. Perhaps it's because Activesync 3.5 allows to to 'synchronise' Access on my desktop with tables on my PPC.

Just do this 1. Start your laptop and press F10 continuously to go to BIOS setup. 2. Go to "System Configuration" -> "Device Configurations" 3. Set "SATA Native Mode" to Disabled. 4. Start the installation while keeping a finger on "F7" key. 5. After some time there will be continuous beeps. 6. Remove your finger for sometime and then continuously press "F7" key till the beeps are repeated. This is done to disable your BIOS ACPI. 7. And then do you normal Xp installation. 8. This should do.
Only a hint. Did you check the small print via the downloads for Pocket PC on the Microsoft web pages? If you download from the regular OS pages they don't mention that certain Pocket PC generations are not supported.
I noticed this but only on Media Player downloads fom the pocket PC pages but it takes time to find this more detailed info.
The Jornada 540 should have come with Outlook 2000. It works fine in Windows XP. When you Sync your computer and Jornada 560, the contact information should transfer from one to the other until both have the same contact information.
Under the Tools pulldown on Activesync, select Options. Sync Options allows you to sync your Contacts by checking the box next to it. The next time you sync, all of your contacts from your 560 will be in your Outlook.
When you get your battery replaced, just sync again and all of the contacts in your Outlook should transfer back to your 560.
The other option is to get a Compact Flash memory card and backup your info onto that. Its much easier. Simply restore your info from your memory card when the battery is replaced.
Hope that helped you.
