Quoting from the manual:
"Turn camera off and then on again. If error persists, contact retailer or Nikon representative."
This is a pretty common problem, especially on the coolpix range. Basically it means the lens has had some issue while driving in or out of the camera body, in some cases a simple tap on the camera side(not recommended by me) can fix the problem, in others you will have to send the camera to nikon to fix it but it will fall outside of warranty as its not considered a normal camera error.

When I was using the camera while placing it in the camera bag it slipped from my hand. Every thing is working fine. The LCD, The slide shows etc. but it shows a lense error. Please help me.

i had the camera in my pocket and i pulled it out and it slipped and fell. now it says lens error. Im working on it now
