While it is possible it really depends on your skill level. Most monitor front panels "click" together. Using some of the tools that are used to repair mobile phones should help such as plastic spadal tools to keep from damaging the plastic edges when you are attempting to pry them apart. It is best if you do not use metal or damage will occur that you can not repair.

Sorry to have to tell you this, but this is common in LCD monitors. The reason that it is going black when it boots is for one of two reasons. You either have a bad power supply that powers your LCD or your LCD's backlight is blown. These can be repaired or you can purchase a new one. But if it goes black 9 times out of 10 is because the backlight is bad. These can be repaired!

Ahhh too funny =) They don't make them adult proof for nothing.
Ok, get a towel, lay it on a flat surface.
Place the monitor screen down onto the towel
Looking from under the monitor there will be 2 main ways to "Disassemble the bastard" heheh Ahhhh ..anyway
Look closely where the front and back panels join. You should see two notches possibly holes there. If so then insert a flat blade screwdiver about 1cm into the hole and lift upwards. It should pop. Do the same for the other side, then gently just using your hands pop it around the rest.
The "theres no bloody notches here method"
Insert a flat blade screwdriver between the case and the top of the power socket. Again, just 1-2cm. Lift up (gently) and this should begin the popping operation.
Just becareful not to jam the blade in too far.

I had a similar problem I had two of these monitors UK spec completely dead and on dissasembly there were two capacitors on the power board which had clearly blown - their 'roofs' were bulging. These were 1000uF 16v radial electroltics - a similar repair to the above cost £5 (say $10) inc P&P to get replacements for both monitors and both work fine now.

I have recently opened my AL1917 (not wide) but it should work the same. First remove the stand. This is done by removing the plastic cover over the stand hinge (which appears to be part of the back cover, but is'nt.) Mine was done with simple tumb pressure at the base of the cover which released the four plastic hooks (clips). Under the cover were six screws, three at each side. Remove these and the whole base and stand comes off. Next remove the two screws just above the base on the back cover. Thereafter the trick bit starts.
I used two small flat screwdrivers and started at the bottom corner (where a slight mark would not be noticed) [I first tried the bottom middle but would not work - made a mark in the plastic]. By wedging the first screwdriver between the silver cover and black backing, and using the second in this gap to twist slightly, a click will be heard when the plastic catch (clip) releases. Once the first clip releases, leave one screwdriver in the gap, and slide the other screwdriver along the bottom till you feel there is another catch, where a slight twist of the screwdriver should release the catch. This process continues right around till the front silver cover is entirely free from the back cover, whereafter both plastic portions can be removed. The first catch is the most difficult of the lot. Once this is done, the rest is relatively easy.
The back of the screen has a metal covering, with several screws at the side. (straight forward to remove) Carefull when splitting the screen from the back metal cover (where two electronic boards are affixed) There are four plastic plugs on one side and a flat electronic connector on the other that must be released before the screen is seperated from the back metal cover. (ps I discharged the capacitors before touching anyting)
If you get this far, perhaps you can assist - which capacitors are the usual culprits - those on the screen, those in the power supply etc? (My screen used to go black after a minute or two, but the green light stayed on)
Cheers
