Remove the hard drive from the lacie box and plug it in directly to your computer to see if the drive is now recognized. If it is the issue is with the lacie box electronics. If still not recognized with a direct connection to computer, see if the bios sees it. If not, the logic board on hard drive is fubar and you have a serious recovery problem.

SOURCE: LaCie 500 GB hard Drive - does not register on my desktop

if it is a USB (or you have low disc space), it does take longer to show up on desktop and patience is required... on my iBook it takes over a minute for my Brick to show up... Whether it is USB or firewire, do try another cord (I had similar problem with my lacie firewire external... I used a different firewire cord and all was fine. If you have tried these already, I hope you find the answer... good luck

SOURCE: My mac is not recognizing my Lacie 1 TB, it

I had the same issue -- turned out that power supply was going bad so the drive wouldn't spin up all the way; this could explain the strange noises you're hearing. I put in a support ticket with LaCie at their website and they sent me a new power supply at no charge (I was within the warranty period, I think).

I WANT TO OPEN THE LACIE 500 GB HDD AND USE THE HDD IN MY DESK TOP

Go for it. There's a chance the internal drive will be PATA (IDE) but odds are good it's a SATA drive with standard connections.

Make sure your PC has connections for SATA drives, and you'll need to buy a SATA cable since the one in the LaCIE case won't connect from your drive to your motherboard.

LaCie 500GB external will not show up on mac desktop. Blue light on, whirrs as if working but no icon on desktop (not mounted)

Did you format the drive using Disk Utility? Open "disk utility" from the dock icon or applications/utilities folder. Click the drive name on the left side of the disk utility window. click the "partition" tab in the window, next click the "options" tab and select GUID Partition scheme, or any Mac compatible scheme, read each explanation of the schemes. Name and resize your partitions, click apply. This is how it works running Leopard, not positive if the same applies to Tiger. I hope this helps you

Bought a new LaCie drive; isn't recognized by mac or pc

Lacie Porsche drives in my experience or infamous for not having the most durable bridge boards. The bridge board is a chip that has a chipset on it which take the SATA or PATA connection and send it to the USB and or Firewire ports on the enclosure. If the drive is powered up, you should get a small red or orange light on the front. When connected to either mac or pc ( porsches are MS_DOS formatted out the box ), if it does not mount or does not appear in DISK UTILTY, then it is a high probability that the enclosure/bridge board has failed and the drive ( if not making grinding, buzzing, clicking or beeping sounds) will have to be extracted and placed into a more stable enclosure. Hope this helps.
