It could be a few things:

1. Check the belt that drives the blades; it could be broken or slipping.
2. Make sure the PTO Switch/Lever is working properly. The cable could be broken, or the spring that sometimes help to engage the blade could be broken.
3. There may also be a large stick lodged in the belt that drives the blades.

Good Luck!

Jd x360 mower deck won't turn on

Check to see if the deck belt is ok and that the linkage is allowing it to engage.

My 1978 JD runs but dies out when I engage the mower deck

Check that the voltage at the battery is 14VDC or higher. If not then bad voltage regulator and/or battery and/or connections.

If voltage is ok, then possibly a safety swtich... please comment with model number.

Sound like a safety switch has gone bad. Either the clutch or seat switch are bad.

JD STX38 mower stalls when deck is lowered

If the belt bounces then it has stretched or the belt tightener is not working. properly. Also check the shear pin in the drive pulley. If it has sheared the blades will try to turn but slip when any pressure is put on.

My tractor keeps shutting off when i engage the mower blades

It would depend on what model, but could either be a deck drive problem or safety switch. With tractor off, I'd check the blades for free movement with no binding. If this is ok, then I would suspect the seat switch. The mower will not run with the deck engaged, and no operator present. It could be the seat switch is not making, so when you engage the deck it kills the motor. Test switch

What causes JD 260 riding mower to start dying when you engage the mower deck? It runs fine when you disengage the mower deck.

It's the safety system that causes this. There is a switch under the seat that should activate when you are sitting in the seat. The switch can come loose or fail, the mounting can break, or the wires can come loose - any of these would cause the "engine dies when I engage the mower deck" behavior. Lift the seat, examine the switch. Rmove the switch and keep the plunger in with a piece of tape. Fixed? Then it's just the mounting or adjustment. Not fixed? It's the switch itself or the wires or connectors to it.

LA145 was mowing and it stopped going forward..won't go forward or reverse..deck engages..bypass valve lever is pushed in

Check the belt that runs from the engine to the transaxle, its separate from the belt that turns the blades. If the belt is ok I recommend you take the mower to a JD dealer.
