Under windows 7 only back port recognizes disk and as 1.1 device. If i connect second USB connector (extra power for USB 2.0) - disk comes up as Letter: and does say i need format it. No problem with it if its connected to any other computer under windows XP or Vindows Vista SP1 or SP2, as well no problems when other external enclosures connected to same computer and no problem if computer is running in windows XP or MAC OS Good ideas welcome if any...

XP is a dead OS.
100% dead. and not supported now. by MS or HP.
but XP needs SP3, or USB will be bad
XP always had bad USB for years until , all patches were done.
The USB on XP are horrible.
you need good USB so all devices are PnP recognized
and negotiated currents (power) is working
and USB2 currents are weaker than USB 3.
and is key to making any motor driven HDD work right.!!

Dead as a door nail and no more security patches ever again.Hp 250 GB Pocket Media - 445635a4-18b0-42a5-a249-084bb91c84b0.jpg

    any XP made, or patched.

    win

and do try all USB ports on PC, mine has like 10.some are USB2 others USB 3.
try them all.. 1 by 1, and others empty?

is the external drive have its own power pack?
    yes,no.
if you use (steal) the PCs, usb power supply to run any external drive the power in the laptop
    can be weak
there are 2 kinds of ports.
    weak
and full spec power on all PCs.

The ports, USB many can not handle the huge
HDD startup currents and the HDD goes nuts
Its not good for the drive either.

Make sure the USB port is programmed never to go to sleep. (windows)

    I own 3 externals, a 3GB and 2x 1gig with external 12vdc 2amp power supply packs
(all fail at 1amp, a FACT)
one for 7 years now, and never dropped a bit. yet. doing huge backups. (full side Seagates)
i buy top enclosures with fan and use them.

The USB currents can be shared too
and are negotiated so if the USB driver
is wrong, you cant get full UsB power.

    datasheet
no external pack provided or jack,
    the HDD here needs 0.6amps
so if the pc cant source that , its doom city.?
    really toss a coin.
    USB 2 limit is 0.5amps. so>

Im the data sheet on this drive
    say, works with MOST.
that most word means, if the PC lacks
the current, needed it will fail.

    which you discovered.

keep in mind it must negotiate that
    100ma , times 5 max. 100,200...
if did that , then 500 is max (100 short)
    if not, its 100mA. FAIL.
all that crapppy XP drivers must do that.
    or it fails.

the motor current can be huge.
if you take out the disk , read the name
and the read name.com datasheet its all there to see, volts and amps to start up that motor
hot and cold. it's not trivial.

SOURCE: MAXTOR 250 gb usb hard disk is not detected

On some computers the output power of the USB ports is too low to drive the Ext. HDD.

Have you tried other USB ports on your computer?

Get yourself a powered USB hub and try that, borrow one if possible, if that works get one for yourself....

SOURCE: Drive not recognized under Vista Home Premium 64-bit

I have seen drives not recognized for a few reasons. Bad drives, drives not jumpered correctly or full-disk encryption was used on them. Here are my thoughts:
Try making sure that the drive is jumpered to Master. Should be a jumper on the back of the drive.
Make sure you did not encrypt the hard drive using full disk encryption.
I use an USB IDE drive enclosure when recovering customer's data using a Vista computer and have not had any issues other than the ones mentioned above.
Let us know if this helps or what you find out.

My iomega media xporter hard drive not being detected by my PC having windows 7?

Try your Iomega drive on another computer to make sure it works. if it works on another computer, then come back to your computer with windows 7 and try different usb ports. Maybe one of your usb ports is bad. If your usb ports are ok, then your drive is not compatible with windows 7.

Go to iomega's website and see if they have an update, patch or driver for Windows 7.

Get online and got to www.google.com In the google search box type: "Iomega Support" (without the quotes and put your manufacturer name before Support). Look for downloads and drivers. Enter your model number and operating system when requested. Download and install the Windows 7 drivers.

My computer won't discover my brand new 250 gb Seagate hard drive. It's connected by a USB port in a HP compaq computer running windows xp version 2002. It didn`t come with any software and says it`s plug...

It is possible the usb port is not giving enough power for the device, theres a cable the allows you to connect the device to 2 usb ports to get more juice, maybe that could help.

You run MS Windows Update to download and install the latest OS updates. Your WD external HDD should be detected after OS update.

For non updates system, try to connect WD to the USB Port where it worked before. If you have 4 USB ports for instance, try to connect it to these ports one try at a time. Windows XP might have assigned one USB port for your device before when it was working just fine.
