Signal I use my etrex legend when I trail ride..the other day I rode with 3 other women, we all had a GPS units..mine was the only one that never rec'd a signal pretty much the whole ride. There were trees but since the others GPS' were working just fine that should not be the problem..Do I need some sort of upgrade or is it time for a new unit? thanks Debbie

Have you hooked it up to your PC and updated the unit's internal software via Garmin.com? This might solve your issue. Pls let us know if it does.

Check the Garmin website for external antennaes. I have this problem too, and get around it by placing the unit on my dashboard under the windshield. Never had a problem getting a signal there.

Go to www.garmin.com, under Products > On The Trail, find your model of GPS (which version of Etrex), and on the far right under the heading "Quick Links", you'll see a link for the manual for that model of GPS.

Your manual will tell you how to use waypoints, mapping to a waypoint, and how to do backtracking. If you don't have the manual, you can download it from the Garmin website www.garmin.com. Under Products > On The Trail, find your model of GPS. On the far right of the page, you will see a link for the manual.

Have you tried upgrading the unit's software. Go to Garmin.com and download the latest software for your unit. This will sometimes fix satellite reception problems.

For back roads, you will need a Topo mapping program, ie Topo USA 2008 or Topo Canada 4 (you don't mention what country you are in).

Topo Canada comes on four CDs, Topo USA 2008 comes on one DVD so you'll have to upgrade your drive, or else load the maps from someone else's computer.

I had this problem today, updated the software, now the unit seems to be working perfectly. The unit "crashes" (single line down screen center) as soon as it get enough satelites to work with WAAS.

Go to Garmin site for software updates. Download and install the WebUpdater. Once or unit is hooked up to your computer and you have internet access, the software will download and update your GPS with the latest software fixes. I had software Version 3.7. For the Legend, Version 3.9 fixes the problems with WAAS.
