Same thing with my 50501...took the backing off and removed the Convergence board ( if looking at the back of the tv its agaisnt the right side of the tv)... removed the board looked and saw what looked like a resistor was black and blown. Took it to the local tv repair place, he said it was common for this model.
It was a coil that blown which blew cause of one of the three chips overloaded. got that coil fix and the chips $150 bucks.... works fine now

I have a different model Mit. tv but, I am having the exact same problem! The remote convergence only improved the center area of my tv screen. The upper and lower convergence grid were boe-tie shaped and parts of the grid are out of the viewing area. I suspect this is the same fault as described.

Any techical info on repairing this would be helpful.

SOURCE: Convergence - bow problem

If you know how to solder on a solid state pruinted circuit board, try to first resolder the convergence IC's. There are two of them, they are black and stand up on a metal heat sink. The IC's will start with stk and have some numbers following that. Sometimes you can get away with resoldering BUT most of the time they have to be replaced. Consult a trained service person if you dont have any TV repair experience as thei like I said is a solisd state set and trhere are really no user replaceable parts inside of them.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Color is off with double image?

Is the image bow-tie shaped, with red, green or blue fringing effects? If so, one of your convergence amplifiers has gone bad. (Bow-tie: at least one of the three primary colors in the picture goes out to the corners, but the top, bottom and sides are bowed in at the center.)

If it is simple color fringing, with no color grossly misplaced, something has messed up the convergence. This may be caused by a strong magnet near the set (for example, a poorly shielded audio speaker), moving the set so its orientation in the geomagnetic field is altered or its components mechanically shifted (rough handling).

If a convergence amplifier is bad, replace it before doing anything else. If you just have minor fringing, see your owner's manual for instructions on using the remote control to adjust convergence. If it isn't in the owner's manual, you'll need the service manual. Caution: if you try to adjust convergence with a failed convergence amplifier, not only will it not help, but you will have a lot of extra work trying to get it back to normal after you replace the amplifier. Try a small adjustment along one edge of the picture. If one or more of the selected color dots in the convergence pattern won't move, and you are sure you are following adjustment directions, stop immediately and proceed with hardware repair.

Convergence amplifiers are usually marked STK392-nnn where nnn is a specific variant number. Two are used; I usually change both because quite a few people have changed one and had the other die not long afterwards. Sometimes there is a fuse in the power feed to these modules that is also blown. If you change the fuse without replacing the amplifiers, you'll probably waste a new fuse.

Bow tie looking picture with 3d color mis-alignment

you have lost convergence. First thing to check is to see if you are missing the convergence option in the customer setup menu. if you do not have this option then i suggest reading the article in the tips and tricks section entiltled "the fl231 fuse problem" this is a common and sometime easy repair if you do have it then you might need a convergence power board

This is a convergence problem that you can fix if you can solder. Let me know if you wish to attempt the repair and I'll post additional details and instructions.

One color Bow-tie Effect.

SAMSUNG Convergence Problem

It looks like blue convergence. Look at menu, select convergence and see if blue top is bent down on convergence adjust screen. Probably won’t adjust.

Some Samsungs have convergence IC’s on a separate convergence board in the back of the TV. Others have the IC’s mounted on the main deflection board. Either way the board has to be removed to get at the dud IC’s and associated burnt resistors.

You remove the appropriate board, determine if any resistors are burnt or damaged, replace any burnt or out of tolerance resistors, replace 1 or 2 IC's and re-install the board.

Now you have to adjust it to look like new.

If the unit has not been misadjusted and everything is OK now, running the auto focus may put the picture back to it’s previous stunning quality as it was before IC failed.

If after Perfect Focus it is still misadjusted noticeably, try the customer convergence adjustments. Operators’ manuals are available on web through searching.

If convergence can not be adjusted properly, you messed up chip install or resistors may be wrong value or open; or it needs major adjustment.

Or try to the find the repairperson part of this website (on the Homepage) and search postal code. Maybe you will be lucky and someone from your area is listed for Projection TV repair.

Most rookies doing this job will cause damage and not be successful. They will pay double for someone to fix their mess or end up scrapping the TV. It is not a simple task. It is more difficult than batteries on a remote.

Good Luck
