I read several posts in 2002 from F707 users whose viewfinder screens had gone blank. The symptoms appear similar to what I am now experiencing, but I could not discover whether anyone had managed to find a satisfactory solution.
After 3 years' use (unsurprisingly just two months after my extended 3-year warranty ran out) and without my being aware of having treated the camera in any way badly, the viewfinder and, if switched on, the lcd screen, remain black, as if the lenscap were still on. All other functions of the camera work, including taking a (now black) image, normal play-back of the new (black) image or of previous good images. Resetting the camera has not helped. All the little icons and texts in the viewfinder are there as usual, and all switches, buttons etc work correctly. Can anyone offer any suggestions or alternatives to sending it in to Sony? I am debating whether this is economically viable, especially as I have a newer DSLR, but am reluctant to ditch the F707 which has taken so many beautiful pictures. Thank you.

Re: DSC-F707 viewfinder black
This same thing happend to me awhile back. Camera seem to be dead for several weeks until one day I tried turning on and then off the night vision. The was the usual click inside the camera and all was well after that. I still use the camera.

Dec 8, 2015 - There is no picture or a black screen appears in the viewfinder or LCDwhen attempting to ... Look to see if an image can be seen in the viewfinder or LCD. IMPORTANT: Some camcorders have both a viewfinder and LCD.
This camera is affected by the CCD issue and there was a Recall earlier to get it repaired under extended warranty which has been withdrawn. Please contact the Service center to replace the CCD of the Camera. If you're located in the U.S, you can visit the website below to create the repair request. www.eservice.sony.com
Somkewhere after submitting the problem, I read a blog that instructed to press all five of the small buttons in the circle on the back while turning on the power. I took me twice and regained the viewfinder. They also had written that it may take a few times.
Sounds like the CCD has developed a fault. I had a F717 which had similar faults but this turned out to be a batch of faulty CCD's which I know the F707 shared. This maybe why Sony are not keen to get involved as it will cost them money. JVC had a similar problem with some of it's Camcorders using a similar CCD and they replaced them FOC even those well out of warranty. Keep trying with Sony and mention the CCD and serial number of the F707 and see if it is one of the faulty batch.
