SOURCE: Cannot start Sony VAIO PCG-5J2L /Goes to black screen only
During start-up the computer will go to a black screen for awhile and then the pointer arrow will show alone, and then the system will come up.
If you think it's a hibernation problem, pull the ac plug and battery out for about 1 hour and then plug back in.
If this didn't work, then try the F8 Key and choose "Last Know Good Configuration".

If it is still under warranty then get it repaired under warranty, because if you try to fix it yourself and do further damage you most likely would void the warranty.

Thats sounds like the wrong drivers for the network card. Some models can have different models or brands of cards so you can get the wrong one in there. You should be able to boot up in safe mode (F8) and then go under control panel - system- hardware manager-network adapters. Find the card that is causing the problems highlight and delete it. Then reboot. This takes the card out of the system and it will be detected as a new hardware next startup. Then try another driver.
You might want to go to the Sony website and check under support to see what other drivers you can get to try for your model. There might be 2-3 to try. Usually the oem disks are right but the replacements don't always get things right.
If this were hardware you shouldn't get the bluescreen of death (BSOD). That usually means software or drivers.

With a loud squeal, it is either your hard drive eating itself up or a fan trying to spin. If it sounds like a pretty songbird caught in a blender, it's probably your hard drive. If it sounds like your younger brother trying to make the most annoying sound in the world, it's probably your fan. To check you could blow compressed air into the fan ports to see if it dislodges a lot of dust. I'm guessing that it's your hard drive though because it is accompanied by the clicking which may be your hard drive trying to reset itself, but having a physical problem. Don't worry, after a few minutes it usually fails completely and you won't have to listen to that noise any more. Maybe take the hard drive out and put it in an external case and see if another computer can read it. Or go on Craigslist and find someone to fix it for you for $40.

What OS are you running? Have you tried to upgrade drivers of you machine? Also you should try any firmware upgrade before you use the warranty.
Testimonial: "Thanks for the info. The STAMINA/SPEED switch is now working and it doesn't restart when I close the lid. I just used the recovery disc's drivers."
