I got the olympus 3000 zoom camera. It takes great picutres and stuff, but periodicaly I have trouble with the smartmedia card reading on it. Now, no card seems to work. I try and format the 128mb smartmedia card I have, and the 16mb smartmedia card in my camera and it doenst work. I was told that you can not format it without being in the camera? Because a replacement for this camera is around 150+.... I was wondering if anybody had a similar problem more a good solutions.

Re: Zoom card problems
I have Olympus C300 Zoom and C4000 Zoom and had the Card Error on both of them. Sent the C3000 to Olympus foir repair, they wanted $200 si I had it returned unrepaired. Talking to an Olympus tech rep he said the problem was the card, not the camera.
I formatted thecard twice in my Kodak Multi card reader and reinstalled it, no luck. Did it again and reinserted the card and when I turned the camera on I switched to the manual mode setting and suddenly everything worked, I formatted the card and from that point on everything worked in all modes, same for the C4000 Zoom. Who knows why, they are both working fine now, two months later.
I hope this helps someone.
Olympus had repaired the C3000 Zoom for the same problem 18 months earlier.

Re: Zoom card problems
This is also my first posting, and I am having a simular problem with the same camera type. When I place the card in the camera, I get the No Card message. When I use the card in a multicard reader I can view all the images. Since the camera is not detecting a card, i can not attempt to format it

You should be able to find card readers at just about any electronics or office-supply store. Just make sure you get one compatible with SmartMedia cards. The brand, as well as whether it plugs directly into a USB port or uses a short cable, are matters of personal preference.
It's a 3.4 megapixel digital camera. It doesn't use any kind of film at all but stores them on SmartMedia memory cards which are now obsolete but still easy to buy online.
The small gears that link the viewfinder and lens may be out of sync.
If you are a technical person, you can remove the frontcover, first taking off the topcover, (one screw is hidden under the mode dial). Power up the camera and remove the batteries when the lens is fully extended. BE CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE CAPACITOR!
Gently lift the viewfinder and move the viewfinder gear one tooth. It will probably only move one way.
Put the batteries back in and try the lens. If this does not solve the problem, you may need to replace the lens or viewfinder.
