Each vacuum cleaner manufacturer produces specific belts for specific machines. An incompatible belt installed on the vacuum cleaner will cause the belt to break or burn. The belt must be installed according to manufacturer directions for best performance, or the belt will chafe against the interior housing parts and break prematurely.Sharp debris, a low height adjustment setting or vacuuming up rug corners may cause the rubber belt to snap or wear prematurely. Check the height adjustment for the vacuum, and use a higher setting for plush rugs. Avoid vacuuming sharp objects and corners of the rug.

Why do the belts keep breaking

Hi there,

Well the problem happens due to the belt If the belt not installed correctly, the rubber belt will grate against one of the components in the roller brush housing. The friction of the belt against the housing produces a pungent burning odor. To correct this you need a right belt, each vacuum cleaner manufacturer produces specific belts for specific machines. An incompatible belt installed on the vacuum cleaner will cause the belt to break or burn.

Good Luck!!

How do I change the belt on a dirt devil ultra vision vacuum cleaner

I just changed mine and I will be blunt. First off, the design is **** on this vacume, secondly the belt was designed to break on the rusty carbon steel pully rod. Ok now that I've vented we will get down to business. On the bottom of the vacume you will find a plastic housing thats covering the brush. It will have 4 screws around the brush plus one above them. The housing itself is shaped like an L. Remove all the screws and expose the bare brush. This was not my case but there should be a belt holding the brush to a small steel pully rod in the top part of the L indention. If not then just locate an indention on the brush where the belt will be placed and look directly beneath that to find the pully rod (probably about 6 inches beneath the indention on the brush). wrap your new belt around the metal pully rod and then take out the brush. Wrap the other end of the belt around the indention on the brush and pull up hard and replace the brush in its vacume housing. This will take some effort as the belt has to be stretched. When finished replace the housing cover with the five screws and boom you're done.

I have a upright vacuum model #U4269-930 I am trying to figure out how to replace the belt. I can't find a manual telling me how to.

UNPLUG THE VACUM CLEANER FROM THE ELECTRICAL OUTLET! OK, now you cannot sue me.
The plastic tabs on this machine can snap and break. Be gentle and try not to break anything.
Remove the roller guard on the bottom using a screwdriver where indicated to pry the retaining tabs.
Remove the upper shell of the motor housing using the same method on its retaining tabs.
Slide the belt off the motor shaft.
Remove the roller being sure to keep track of which way it came out so you can replace it in the right direction.
Remove the belt from the roller.
This is a good time to clean out the dust and debris especially from the roller and the motor's air vents (for cooling the motor).
Place the new belt on the roller.
Install roller in the correct direction.
Pry the new belt over the motor shaft. This will take some muscle and guts to stretch it.
Replace upper shell housing.
Replace roller guard.
Be ready to shut off immediately in case there is a problem.
Plug in and test.

It might be a slipping rubber belt, is the brush roller moving when you look underneath? If it's a self propelled machine there might be another slipping belt. Friction from fast rubbing rubber can smell like it is burning.
