Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hello, Alright, here's the problem. I have a 1 TB WD My Book external hard drive with a whole lot of data on it. The thing is, when I try to access it through My Computer it says "I:\ Access is denied.". So, what I usually end up doing is going to the drop-down list at the top of the window and selecting "I:\" from there. When I do that, it opens just fine. Also, sometimes, I disconnect its USB connection and reconnect it. This brings up the Autoplay / Choose action window. When I choose "Open folder to view files", it works fine as well. I've also used Adobe Bridge to access it without any problems. When I use the Photoshop "Open file" dialogue box, there's no problem there either. My question is, what's stopping me from accessing it directly from My Computer?

Typically this occurs when the permissions on your drive have been changed. Do a search on "resetting permissions" on your external hard drive that is specific to the operating system you are using. There are paid programs that can do this but don't be afraid to is a command shell window to carryout this task (this is a window where you actually type in commands with extensions like DOS in the old days). All tutorials out there will show you exactly how to open this shell window and what exactly to type in as a command. If you are not wanting to try then ask somebody you know that is computer savvy to help you out. It's only one command but once started may take sometime to complete depending on the size of your drive and how many files are on it (could take hours).

SOURCE: Western Digitial 320 GB Passport - Unable to access files

Hello,

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not be enough to power up your USB Drive.

After making sure about this, power up your system, and plug the external drive, then Right-Click on my computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk Management Option.

On the Disk management option Page you should see ALL the drives installed on your system, including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is, try and locate the one representing your external drive, and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter and Paths", and give the drive any new, unique letter (i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your system, and click on OK.

This should make your external Drive to be detected automatically.

Or in case there is a problem with the read/write head inside the hard drive.

What I would advise you to do is, unscrew the hard drive case and remove the Hard disk from the case, connect it directly to a system, not externally or through USB this time around, then get a software called NTFS DOS Professional. It is a software that works like magic when it comes to hard drive repairs.

If you know any other hard drive utility, apart from this, you can also use it. I just recommend this personally because that is what I use.

Insert it into your PC, start up your CD-ROM and let your system boot from CD-ROM.

It works through DOS, and it should be able to help you with it.

If this does not solve the problem, then I'm afraid you might need to replace the hard drive.

And if it repairs it, I would suggest that you just retrieve all your valuable files from it and don't fully rely on the hard drive again because of the hardware error it has developed. Just keep using it as a second.

If you cannot do this by yourself, just get a very good technician to do it for you instead.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem.

Hope it helps.

Goodluck.

Hello Folks. I have a my book essential wd 1 tb hdd.. led lights kept blinking wasnt being detected.. the info on it is valuable.. i read online and the got bright idea of taking out the sata hdd inside.....

You can get drivers here http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?level1=1&lang=en

But he first thing to do is determine the condition of the drive. You can check if there are problems with the drive using the free trial version of http://www.hdtune.com/

If it checks out ok then you can try to recover your data with Recuva it's free http://www.piriform.com/recuva

How do I disconnect (uninstall) a WD External Hard Drive from my computer? I am using a WD 3200AAK WD External Hard Drive and want to install a 1 TB WD External Hard Drive. I would like to use the old one...

External hard drives don't need any program installed on your computer to run. Your operating system Windows, Linux should handle it as soon as you plug the usb in your computer. The programs included in your WD external hard drive are tools to backup your data.

If you try to hook up your hard drive to a Windows prior to XP, maybe your computer will not handle it.

It is always safer to safely remove your drive using the green arrow icon in the lower right corner of your screen. This way, the drive is shut down properly and you minimize chances of fails when you plug it again on another computer.

Hope this helps!

When i connect two external hard disks (each 1TB), i can't see the data of one of them

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.
