This is a common problem for most laptops.
With my experience in HP laptops, you can reinstall the touch pad drivers. Visit the HP website and click on the support link, select the model of your laptop under the 'Drivers' section and download the touch pad drivers for your model.
If that does not solve your problem, buy an external USB mouse for your laptop, that is the best alternative solution most people with touch pad problems resort to.
