For compatibility with Vista it should only require installing the
newest version of ActiveSync which is free from Microsoft's site. But, If you mean the Pocket PC OS Revision, I don't think you can legally update the OS beyond a version number (Like 3.3 to 3.5) and if your not able to sync with certain Office components, etc. because of the OS, there isn't much choice legally but to buy the upgrade.
