You'll need a usb cable... then go to www.garmin.com
the small end of the usb cable goes into the back of the gps... the larger end into the usb port... the computer should find it for you.

I can not install the map on to my 260w garmin

connect the unit to the computer using a USB data cable and then go to www.garmin.com and register the unit, if your unit is new you get one free update with-in 90 days if outside that time frame you will have to purchase either a one time update for 49.99 or lifetime updates for 89.99

I have been trying to register my new nuvi 1410 which i bought on saturday . I get as far as " Please wait while communicator plugin detects your connected device " How long should this take ?

Please make sure that you are connecting the usb cable directly to a usb port on your computer and NOT through a usb hub. Then make sure you are registered with Garmin and have downloaded the latest Garmin updater software. Make sure that the unit is fully charged. Once it is connected and recognized the map update can take hours even with a fast internet connection.
Thanks for using FixYa.

I have a seagate external drive of a capacity of 250GB. the free space available is 177 GB. the hard disk is very slow? please help?

Are you connecting this high-speed ("USB 2.0") device to a low-speed ("USB 1.1") USB-port on your computer? If so, and your computer has a "USB 2.0" port, connect your device to that port.
If not, then purchase an add-in PCI card for your computer, to add "USB 2.0" port(s).

Where is the usb port on the unit to plug into my computer? dont see one

You have to have a mini usb to usb connecter. the small port on the back, the charging port acts as the usb port. unfortunatly they don't come with one.

if your charger not original garmin you should make this modification on mini usb port. tested works with non original chargers (min 500mA).

I cannot install music from my computor to my Ipod 4 nano

If you can't connect iPod nano to your computer , make sure;
  • you have installed the latest iTunes software from www.apple.com/ipod/start.
  • Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer. Note: A USB 2.0 port is recommended to connect iPod nano. USB 1.1 is significantly slower than USB 2.0. If you have a Windows PC that doesn’t have a USB 2.0 port, in some cases you can purchase and install a USB 2.0 card. For more information, go to www.apple.com/ipod.
  • iPod nano might need to be reset (see page 64).
  • If you’re connecting iPod nano to a portable or laptop computer using the iPod Dock Connector to USB 2.0 Cable, connect the computer to a power outlet before connecting iPod nano.
  • Make sure you have the required computer and software. See “If you want to double check the system requirements” on page 68.
  • Check the cable connections. Unplug the cable at both ends and make sure no foreign objects are in the USB ports. Then plug the cable back in securely. Make sure the connectors on the cables are oriented correctly. They can be inserted only one way.
  • Try restarting your computer.

Problem setting up home network with d-link des-1105. Windows Vista on main PC & Windows XP on laptop. Presently, I have ethernet cable connected on main PC to d-link and usb cable connected to laptop & to...

A router is basically a mini-computer that splits up one internet connections to 4 (or whatever # of ports you have).

Basic Connections to a router:
A Router requires a internet connections, so your broadband modem must connect to the WAN port (theres only one) of the router DIRECTLY. Then Ethernet cables go from the router to the computers on the LAN ports. Don't do something weird like connecting your internet to your computer then your computer to the routers WAN port, it'll most likely mess up.

Once you have connected your router like this, it should work.

If your modem only has a usb port, I have no idea how to make that work out. Sorry. Try getting a new modem from your ISP, or check if your modem does have a ethernet port, if it does just connnect that to the routers wan port.

Also computers should not interconnect with each other with use of a router. Thats what the router is for. Everything gets connected and split up at the router, nothing connects to anything else but the router, basically.

Garmin nuvi 260w not operating while plugged in

If you are trying to use your unit in the car via the USB port and not the supplied cable, it will not work. You must use the bracket that came with the unit or the specific charger that came with the unit. The pins in the Garmin USB charger only use two pins whereas a regular charge cable uses 4.
