Hitachi Faces Dallas Federal Lawsuit Over HD Television Defects Class-action could involve tens of thousands of Hitachi TV owners DALLAS ? The Law Offices of Heygood, Orr, Reyes, Pearson & Bartolomei in Dallas has filed a lawsuit against the American subsidiary of Japanese consumer electronics giant Hitachi (NYSE: HIT) over alleged defects in the company?s high-definition television sets. According to the lawsuit, tens of thousands of consumers who bought the high-end TVs may be experiencing the same trouble. Plaintiff Anthony Partida of Dallas says he and other owners of Hitachi?s 50V500A model LCD rear projection television are experiencing a design defect that creates green ?blobs,? red ?blooms,? green haze, blue dots, yellow lines and other color anomalies on their TV screens. The lawsuit, which seeks class-action status on behalf of every owner of the 50V500A model, says the defect makes the televisions useless for their intended purpose. In the lawsuit against Hitachi America Ltd., filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, attorneys for Mr. Partida say Hitachi has known of the defect since early 2005, but the company has continued to sell the defective sets. Despite the company?s knowledge of the problem, the lawsuit continues, Hitachi has been unable or unwilling to develop a solution. ?Hitachi has been more than willing to take people?s money for these TV sets and they should be more than willing to fix them,? says attorney Eric D. Pearson of Heygood, Orr, Reyes, Pearson & Bartolomei, who represents Mr. Partida in the case. ?In some cases, people paid $3,500 or more for these TVs. You can?t take that kind of money and deliver a defective product.? Brisbane, Calif.-based Hitachi America is a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Hitachi, Ltd., a telecommunications, electronics, power systems, digital media and consumer products giant that employs more than 400,000 people worldwide. The Law Offices of Heygood, Orr, Reyes, Pearson & Bartolomei is a Texas civil litigation firm representing businesses and individuals in matters involving personal injury claims, contract disputes, business torts, professional negligence and more. More information on Heygood, Orr, Reyes, Pearson & Bartolomei is available at http://www.reyeslaw.com. we have a blue blob and a pinkish tint across the screen. Same is true for cable or DVD picture, so it has to be the TV.

I bought my TV approx. 3 years ago. Had to replace the bulb last year and now I have nice blue glow in the middle of the screen. What a complete waste of money.

Anyone have the same problem with the 42V715 LCD model? Is the 42V715 included in the lawsuit?

  • vanrosa30 Sep 05, 2008

    Hello,

I have the same problem with my Hitachi 50V500. My TV started with a blue line at the top right corner and then disappeared after sometime. Later the whole set became mostly yellow and at first I taught it was my kids who had touched the TV but when I contacted a technician who then confirmed to me that it was the optical light engine that needed replacement which will cost me $650 for the light bulb and $200 for labor. I am now seriously thinking whether to repair this TV or not. This is my email: [email protected]

  • npmartin Sep 06, 2008

I have a blue streak in the upper left of my screen. It seems to be getting larger. I have not taken any action as yet other than to do a little research online. I am assuming that the repair, if it can be done, would be expensive. I have had my TV for a little less than 5 years.

I have had this 50V500 TV for approx. 4 yrs and just a few days ago I noticed a redish orange bloom / glow almost dead center on my screen. My first thought was the internal color alignment was out or the lamp needed to be replaced. So I started to research and here I am... Please contact me about a resolution or fix!

    Thanks

I have the same problem with the redish glow. I assumed the lamp was going bad and started researching. I then found out a lot of other people have the same problem with their hitachi 50v500. I would like to be added to your list. It's a shame to pay that kind of money and not be able to enjoy the tv. I have two kids and we cant enjoy all the christmas shows because the color on the tv is ridiculous. I can be reached at mooresusedcarsllc@verizon .net

I have the exact same problem and have had no results from Hitachi or RC Willy in getting it fixed.

We purchased this TV from RC Willy back in 2005 (??) and the purple hue started the first year.  We were unaware that this was a problem and thought we would just have to have a tune up visit.  When we spoke with RC Willy, they suggested we contact Hitachi.

Hitachi customer support was completely evasive and did not have a response nor a replacement part at that time.  Further investigation uncovered more clients with the same problem.  I have been trying to wait this out a bit so that Hitachi could release a new light engine that would - fix - the problem long term.  Obviously - that has not happened and we are stuck with a lemon.

I want on this list.  We were duped thinking that we were getting a state of the art $4000 HD tv.  Please add me to the list.  (See my email to you.)

We are having the same problem with the red glow in the middle of the screen. I have the 50V500 that is approx 4yrs old. The red glow has been there for about one year and is not getting bigger. I called Hitachi and one support person told me it was the lamp. I then researched the lamp to find only this may not fix the problem. We I called Hitachi back the support person told me it was no the lamp and I need to call a repair tech to my home.

I have a red spot on the tv screen

  • Anonymous Dec 29, 2008

50v710 had the same problem. The Optical Block (light engine) gets too hot and cooks the lcds inside. It seems to come after a bulb change quite often. I noticed in mine that there is a dust filter on the front side of the Light Engine that gets clogged up with dust over time ... this contibutes to the heat build up. Mine manifested itself after 2 1/2 years as a large yellow spot in the middle of the screen. I replaced the light engine (UX23682) with out of pocket money to fix it. Hopefully Hitachi will be held accountable some day with a class action law suit ruling against them. They obviously know there's a problem ... they're just running from it.

  • tixomir Jan 10, 2009

I am having red circle issue with my t.v. also. Circuit City replaced light engine 2 years ago for same problem under my extended warranty but now I am not under warranty anymore. I would appreciate any help to get this issue resolved.

  • alexjhtx Jan 10, 2009

We are looking at the same problem also that developed about a month or two after replacing the lamp. I called Hitachi's help desk and the best he could offer was call a repair service. Not even a reasonable tip or explanation as to what the purple/red streak running across the middle of the screen is. Now I know why there is a class action against them. You can include me in the same also.

I bought a Hitachi 60V500 60 in HDTV-Ready LCD Television that has the same problems. I have red blurs on the screen and red shadows on every object. I paid over $3500.00 for this television and find it frustrating to not be able to use it. I would like to join the class action lawsuit to hold Hitachi accountable.

I have the exact same problem! I get headaches watching that stupid thing. Had it repaired once while it was under warranty but it was never really fixed. It's just as bad, if not worse, then when I made the original service call. I contacted the law firm handling the class action suit and they said they are no longer handling. Does anyone know how I can get in on this suit? Thanks!

no sound out of my 42V715 model

  • Anonymous Apr 24, 2009

Same problem with our Hitachi 42V715 projection HDTV. Paid big bucks for it 4 1/2 years ago. Three years later, the screen began to turn yellow - in blobs. The blobs grew. Finally this month, the lamp blew. I put in a new one thinking that the problem was the bulb, but the yellow/green blob is back with a vengeance. After some research, I now need a "light engine" - for even more money than the lamp. To make matters worse, my new lamp blew five days after installation. Now the fix for the problem is costing more than if I went out and bought a new thin flat HDTV. Can I dump this thing at Hitachi Headquarters?

  • Anonymous May 21, 2009

I have the same problem with my Hitachi 60v500a and am quite angry I bought a new bulb and the problem consists.

Have an extended warranty like me, well even though i did purchase one I still am pissed. I paid $3300 for this set 60v500a and like I suspect many the red cloud just crept up on them until it became a real nusiance. I called Hitachi first but they were unwilling to help at all and tried to tell me it was the bulb, thank god for the internet or I might of believed them (-$400 out of pocket because warranty doesn't cover bulbs). Went to the lawfirms website and sent an email to add me to the many names in the lawsuit hopefully will hear back from them. Was pissed to find out that the repair shop is going to replace the light engine with a refurbished part. Didn't buy a refurbished TV but get a refurbished part well will be keeping a close eye on any red clouds in the future considering I still have a year and a half left on the warranty and will be complaining of any problems. For all others I will be asking the repair man if this is a common problem to share with others. I hope the lawyers hold Hitachi responsible for this, got a lotta nerve selling defective junk to consumers but corporate greed knows no bounds i guess.

Hitachi 50v500 sceen has little dots showing

You have a set that was involved in a large class action lawsuit---the optical engines in this model had issues where they turned red or another color---little dots in picture is a classic optical light engine problem---last time I looked the part alone not counting labor was over 600 dollars.

THIS IS SO COMMON THERE ARE NOW SEVERAL CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS OVER IT---I suggest you get involved---the replacement engines are all rebuilt and supposed to "not have the same trouble".

Hitachi 50v715 light engine problem

Lots of their sets had this problem(sony also has the same problem and they now cover the engine for 3 years) I have learned after being in this business for over 30 years---people who take no for an answer do not get anything---keep going up the chain of command and keep of record of who you talk to with date, name, etc If you spend enough time on the phone you may get somewhere--you have nothing to lose by trying. If you paid for the set by check or credit card you should be able to prove you paid for it and when.

Hitachi 50V500 Red Spot

I had whole redish/pinkish screen on my 50v500 starting a few days ago, then I read through each of the threads on this site for the samilar problems on my model. I found TVtechmaniac's solution (pasted below) solved my problem. Thank you TVtechmaniac!

Enter the I2C Service Menu, be sure the power is OFF.
1. On the front control panel, press and hold the INPUT button.
2. Then press the POWER button for two seconds.
3. You may keep the INPUT button depressed until you see the OSD with the Service Menu displayed.
4. If you don't see the service menu, please repeat Process making sure you wait until the Power blinking LED stops.
5. Execute the Memory Initialize operation after the adjustment values have been written on a sheet of paper. Highlight “MEMORY INTI”, arrow to the right and hold the button to the right (approx 5 sec.) until a check mark appears in the box. This activates the Memory Initialization.
6. After the Memory initialize operation has finished (10~15 sec, the channel will revert to CH 3.) the pink image symptom should be fixed.
7. Write back the adjustment values from your notes to their respective adjustment parameters in the adjustment mode. (In other words, set the Data Values back to the the Data values written down before the Memory Initialization procedure). NOTE: Make sure the SELECT Button is pressed on remote after every change to the values. Failure to do so will result in the data values not being changed.
8. Exit I2C menu. Press exit repeatedly until you go back to the normal picture.
9. Turn the set off-on and Confirm the picture remains in a good condition.
BE SURE TO COPY DOWN DATA SETTINGS BEFORE INITIALIZING I2C SETTINGS

Pink LInes/Blob on screen

More than likely, you need a new light engine. It's not the same as the lamp. It's a $1500 part that until recently, Hitachi was covering for free regardless if you were still under warranty or not. They've stopped taking care of their customers due to the number of us that have had this same problem.

You can give it a shot and call their customer relations department at 800-654-7013 and see what they tell you. They replaced our light engine back in November and if you reference Hitachi 50v500 on this website, you will see all of the upset folks that are now being told "too bad".

Wish I had better news. The only way to know for sure that the problem is the light engine is to call a certified Hitachi dealer in your area or the store you bought the set from and have them come out. Wish I had better news!

HITACHI ULTRAVISION 50v500

Hello
This is usually not a repair a layman is able to do
as the ammount of plugs and wiring that go with it.
also the tubes have to be set up after installation .
The actual problem may be the red driver transistor or a cold solder joint.
I recommend a tec. to repair it.
