When the ink level for an ink cartridge is low, a message appears on the
display. You can also check the ink levels by using the printer Toolbox (Windows)
To go to the Printer Toolbox:

In the HP Solution Center, click Settings, point to Print Settings, and then click
Printer Toolbox.

SOURCE: how to check ink level on hp officejet 6210 all-in-one printer

  • Open the Printer Toolbox . There are two ways to do this:
    • Click Start and select HP Solution Center . Select the Settings menu, then the Print Settings submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox .
    • In your printing application, click File , click Print , and click Properties . Click the Services tab, then the Service This Device icon.
  • The Printer Toolbox opens. Click the Estimated Ink Level tab. A cartridge may be running out of ink even if the graphic shows ink remaining (see the note at the start of this section). Lines or streaks always appear in printouts when the cartridges begin to run out of ink. Replace print cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink.

SOURCE: How do I find out the ink levels on my cartridges

    Open "Printers and Faxes".
Right-mouse click on the HP printer.
    Choose Properties.
Look for "Tools" or "Advanced" tab.
On that tab, there should be a "check ink levels" button.

Or, access the vendor's web-site, click "support", click "download drivers", select your model, and install the "full" drivers, which will include the "HP Toolkit" software, which has a "check ink levels" button.

How do i find ink levels in Windows 8 for HP Office Jet J4580

It depends on what type of ink cartridge you have installed.....with HP genuine ink cartridges and HP Solution center installed, everything should be there. However, if you get an HP integrated ink cartridge refilled (i.e. HP 60, 61, 74, 75, 901, 92-98....currently offered at Costco or Frys today) or if you buy a remanufactured/compatible HP ink cartridge, the ink levels will not be displayed nor can they be reset (HP has a smart chip embedded within the nozzle plate at base of ink cartridge which counts the drops and then registers as empty).....so you'll just need to live with it and ignore 'ink low', 'non-genuine', 'counterfeit' messages and similar while you are using these types of aftermarket supplies. The first video below provides an overview of the 'low ink' phenomena.

NOTE: These types of 'SEVERE' cartridge errors (i.e. "refer to documentation" / "incompatible cartridges", "print cartridge(s) problem" etc.) typically indicates the internal micro-electronics of the HP #901 / 901XL cartridge are damaged. The cartridge's electrical wire runs at rear and lower side of the ink cartridge are very delicate and are somewhat susceptible to ink attack over time, which can lead to premature failures. In addition, the older the cartridge the higher the chance of an internal electrical failure. I suggest you first run a 'Tap 41' diagnostic test to check cartridges electrical health (this is a forced test); you may also bypass the error (temporarily) on all models which use HP 901 cartridges. How do i find out my ink level on my laptop?

Do you have the HP Printer Toolbox installed?

Follow these steps to check the estimated ink levels from the HP Printer Toolbox. NOTE: If a refilled or remanufactured print cartridge has been installed, or a cartridge that has been used in another printer, the ink level indicator will be inaccurate or unavailable.
    1. Open the Printer Toolbox .
      1. Open HP Solution Center .
      2. Click Settings .
      3. Click Printer Toolbox .
NOTE: The Printer Toolbox can also be opened from the Print Properties dialog box. In the Print Properties dialog box, click the Services tab and then click Service this device .
    2. Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab.
