I am trying to connect my Sony digital camera (DSC-w5) to my computer to unload the pictures. The driver generates errors when i try to connect to the computer. I have installed according to the instructions, using the driver supplied on disk, rebooting and then connecting. I get the error message "sonycopy.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. you will need to restart the program". I have since removed the driver and reinstalled but still get the error. there are no driver updates on the sony site and Sony Tech support is unable to identify the problem. my operating system is windows 2000.
I am able to connect to the camera and retrieve the photos through "My Computer" using the camera as a removable drive. the problem is that when i connect the camera I get the same error message every time, and if i disconnet the camera I get an unsafe removal of USB device message.

Re:
2 ideas.
1. Use the eject command in Explorer or on the system tray to eject the USB drive safely.
2. Let me be blunt. I can't count how many machines are not up todate on motherboard drivers, BIOS and the OS itself. It's not your fault, but it falls to the owner to maintain the machine.

To reset turn off the camera and remove the battery. Hold down the power button for 15 seconds then release. Reinsert the battery pack and power on the camera.
Remove the Battery pack from the Camera then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Next, reinsert the Battery pack in the Camera and try to turn it ON. Make sure that the Battery pack is fully charged. If the LCD remains white then the LCD screen needs to be serviced or replaced.
This due to a malfunction in the software your usin to to download the photos.May be because your file no. is reseted. The best way is to connect the pc to your machine. When the software pops in close it down.Manually go to my computer and access the photos from the memory card or camera which appears as a memory storage device
try downloading the drivers from sony first
http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&externalId=C116935&fes=true&mdl=DSCW5
that is if you have already downloaded the proper usb drivers for your system in which case other usb device are still working
also it is possible that the usb port itself has gone bad or is in conflict with another driver assuming your using windows to check this you can start by telling me which version of windows you are using but more than likely the proper camera drivers will solve the issue
No need to install any driver as Vista already has driver for Sony DSC-W5, just hook up camera through USB cable with PC and Windows will recognize and install driver automatically.
take your memory stick out of your camera and theres this sliding thing on the back...slide it so that its not on the lock side? does that make any sense? well..good luck!
Assuimn there is nothing on the lens[I would not think this is the case as it would not show as a distict spot
Not ne fora DIY or a repairshop this is a a failure of the CCD.
Depending on the age of the camera and model this may qualify for replacement, as there was a reported CCD issue at one time
Either that or Sony may offer a replacement at a good discount.
