Is the player working normally otherwise?
If so, then try the player in a different USB port on your computer. When plugged in, the display of the Pearl should say that it is connected to a USB device and it will show up automatically as a removable external drive in your windows explorer.
If not, then upgrade the firmware in the unit and the computer will recognize it again. Download the firmware upgradefrom
http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/related/1, and follow all the troubleshooting instructions that popup when you start the program:
start the program,
remove the battery,
hold the play button while plugging into usb,
release the play button the the term "initalizing" replaces "searching",
check the box that says "format data" (you can try it first without this checked, it may work and will save your music),
click the start button to replace the firmware.
After I did this, my pearl started normally, and my computer recognized it again.
I did what you suggested and put in a different USB port it still did not read it. When I had it on yesterday it showed that the firmware had been updated. There are no yellow exclamation marks. Now it want even install automatically so I went in under Windows Explorer to install and it tries to install then a message comes up that says minimum system requirements. No. 1 supported operating system: passed, 2 Internet Explorer: failed, 3. Windows Media Player: Passed. When I hit OK button it goes to another screen that says click on link below to download the latest version. Please install a version of Internet Explorer between 6 & 8 before attempting to install player. I have done this and it still says Internet Explorer failed. The player turns off when connected to the PC it does not show anything. I have been working on this for a week and now all my songs have been deleted. Please help.
I sent you a comment around 1am Fri. 7-22-11 and I am not sure if it went through.
I dont think my first comment went through.
