USB transfer problem--*IST D

I am running Windows ME on my computer. When I connected my *ist d to the computer for the first time, Windows found the camera and installed a USB mass storage device driver. Although the driver was installed I can't upload the photos. Windows System shows the driver installed, but the storage device doesn't show up as new drive when I go to "MY Computer" or in Windows explorer. I've installed and reinstalled the driver several times, but no luck. The little icon on the bottom right side of the screen shows the device installed, and when I try to shut off the cmera before stopping it, I get a nasty little message saying I shouldn't do that. So windows does recognize the camera, but doesn't let me see or upload the photos. Can some one out there help or offer a suggestion?

I solved that problem with a strange method. I have a zip drive and an external hard drive which I only turn on once or twice a month. I found that if I boot-up with these two devices turned on, the camera is recognized as another drive when I turn it on, and I can upload the photos. If I boot-up with these two devices not turned on, no drive letter is assigned to the camera, and I can't upload my photos.

Not sure if it's relevent, but every time I connect my camera to my PC (running XP Pro), the camera says "Battery Deleted" and shuts down. The drive shows for a second or two then disappears from windows. Only occurs when the battery pack is attached to the camera. Without the battery pack it's fine.

I would dig around in http://www.usbman.com to see if any patches for Win ME. Used that OS for about 6 months before dumping it. Not my favorite to say the least. Then again that was a long time ago. Would help to know who's USB chip is in your box. Actually cannot recommend any Win products but XP. Have used Win 3.1,95,98,98se,me,xp home.
