With the camera in Playback mode (reviewing pictures you have already taken), press the DISP button until the LCD shows what you want -- no information, basic information, or full shooting information.

Be aware that the built in flash does not pop up automatically in all picture modes. Try it when in the different modes (on the mode dial) and see what I mean. Does it popo up when manually opened ?, (small button on front left hand side of the viewing pentaprism/flash housing.)

Have canon rebel xti digital 400d--how do i see live image prior to shooting on lcd monitor

This Canon model 400D or XTi does not have Live view capability in the LCD screen, so you cannot do it.

You have to use the view finder to select the image that you want to capture with it.

If you need a Canon DSLR camera with Live View capability, you need to try other different model such as the T1i or XSi.

Best regards,

Similar problems as other readers. camera turns on but no real time image on LCD screen. LCD contiues to show settings i.e. full auto mode etc. But I can view pictures already taken. Thanks

The XTi and prior EOS models have not capability to see the live image to be shoot on the screen. Only the image after taken can see on the screen. Other images also using the view mode.

If you can't review the images, eve if the display is turned off, just after they are taken, maybe the "Review time" is set to "off". Go to settings, 3th tab, Review time and set the desired setting.

The Xti (400D) does NOT have live view. This was first introduced on the Xsi (450D).

New EOS XSi LCD don't work

You have to set the camera to "Live View" mode. Check your manual for settings.
BTW, it's usually a bad idea to use Live View mode unless the camera is on a tripod. With Live View you have to hold the camera out in front of you and it's much less steady.

New canon eos digital rebel xti

There have been several reports of CF cards that work with all cameras, except the Rebel XTi. It depends on the actual manufacturer of the card. Canon made a change mid-production that affected the data saving. Try another brand of card & you should not have that problem any more.

Canon eos digital canon rebel xti - LCD won't work when shooting

Most DSLR cameras (like your Canon) don't have a live view - in other words, you can't "see" the image before you capture it. You must use the viewfinder.
