I have a Smeg SA 398x model. firstly, I would like to know the year of manufacture please. Secondly, for some reason the fan element options do not heat up. The fan in the back of the oven works but no heat is produced. The "conventional" oven without the fan heats properly. Does this mean the Fan element is broken? Are they easy and inexpensive to replace?

This tutorial will show you how to check your Smeg element and how to replace your Smeg cooker element.
Here are the 3 main faults to look for in your oven or cooker that is not heating

  • Your oven will not work until the clock/timer has been re-set after replacing an oven element or tripping the electrical supply. Consult your Smeg manual.
  • If your Oven is not getting hot or heating up it could be a faulty element, if the fan in the oven is running and the thermostat light is on, this will lead us to believe that the element has gone faulty. With grills the thermostat light should come on there should be heat, if not then this could be the grill element or the thermostat.
  • When you turn the oven on, the household electrical supply trips on the Rcd (this is the earth trip in the fuse board sometimes called the breaker tripping) your fan oven element has gone to earth and needs replacing.

SOURCE: SMEG SA 398X

OK I have just moved into an apartment with this model (SA 398 X/1) and was searching for a user guide (no luck yet).

Anyhow my apartment was owned by a bachelor and it looks as though he hardly used the oven so everything's still intact.

I'm in Australia and these numbers are in Celsius so I hope they work for you.

From top Right (starting at the 2 o'clock position) the four numbers going clockwise downwards are:

50
90
120
160

Then from the left side (starting at 7 o'clock position) going clockwise upwards:

200
230
250 - with dots arching above the 250

Hope this helps -

Jane

Smeg oven SA 392 EB - technical difficulties

first of all the yellow/orange light glowing is a known fault. it needs a slight wiring modification to fix it, however it dose not affect the operation of the oven nor is it dangerous.
now to the heating problem, there is a round element at the rear witch surrounds the fan. is this element getting hot? if not then it most likely needs replacing. it could be the thermostat but more likely the element.
