I have had the Pentax Optio 450 now for about four months. A great camera. I love the size, the 5X optical zoom, and most of the features. However, there appears to be an issue with the camera when I try to power the camera off. Sometimes the power will go off (LCD will go off) but the lens will not retract. This is intermittent. Sometimes it will and sometimes it will. When it doesn’t, it is a pain because I have to keep pushing the power button before it eventually comes back on. I then have to try it again to get the lens to retract. I sent it back to Pentax for repair and they sent it back (after about 5 weeks) and it still has the problem (I don’t know what they did but they didn’t fix the problem). Has anyone had this problem with the 450, 550 or 555 cameras?
This has happened once to me only. I noticed it started after the lens cover jammed one time. I gently flicked the lens cover shut and pulled the lens also gently when it was fully extended. Seemed to fix it. I had also uploaded the new foirmware at the same time so perhaps that fixed it ? Not sure which. The lens cover system is very flakey - it needs a cover itself as every time you put the camera in a case or in a tight pocket the lens cover gets slightly out of whack and jams. If it happens all the time then sounds like a defect.

It is not the auto-off. It happens about half the time when I push the on/off button - the power goes off on the lcd but the lens does not retract. It's dead. I can get it back on by pushing the on/off button several times and the unit will come back on. I then have to go through the process again. It's a real pain to get the lens to retract sometimes. I would like to think it is something simple, but I can't figure it out. I think it is defect.

The LCD goes dark after the camera has been inactive for a time, to save battery. When that happens, you can easily restore the LCD display by half-pressing the shutter. If you want to, you can turn this off by selecting menu-setup-SleepTimeout and turn it off. (I don't recommend it, though, as the LCD always on will drain your battery).
