It's possible but i would not recommend it due to failure and losing all your data...it's simply not worth it, replace it.
One possible issue is if you have a gaming motherboard then they sometimes have a setting such as "cool n' quiet" or "power saver" for the hard drives, setting it to let the drive make its own choice often helps if the hard drive is still good. otherwise its likely the hard drive failing.

1.the most common problem in Hard Disk not working properly because of bad sector..
2.if your Hard Disk is IDE type and you want the 80gb became a primary put the jumper to first line and 40gb became a primary slave use a 1pc of IDE cable to troubleshooting this kind of problem.
